  • NYPD, can I join the military?

So I'm currently a recruit for the NYPD and was wondering if I would be able to join the military after getting out of the academy, perhaps a year later or so.

Ideally, I would be looking to become a reservist of some sort...

You sure you went through APD and completed the psych?

You will already be a reservist for the nypd and the people of nyc.
Captain Square Badge, reporting for duty!.

You would need prior permission to join the reserves, and they are not going to do that if you are on probation. (I think probation is 2 years)
As long as your record is good, they will not deny you, you just have to follow the rules.

Call the military and extended leave desk and ask. Im pretty sure you have to submit a 49 to the PC and he will decide but it is also a Fed law that if you wish to serve they really cant deny you. GOOD LUCK.

Would joining the reserves hurt your chances of being appointed. I owe 4 years IRR still so I am thinking about just doing Selective Reserve.

            not at all.

and being in the irr you can sign a new contract w/o any run arounds or permissions even when you're in because you're technically not past your ets yet and still considered a reservist.

I did it the other way around. But in my unit it seems everyones an LEO or FF. If you are in the 5 boroughs or Nass/Suff you should look into where I'm at. PM me if you have any questions!
