Any prior military in here? Anyone draw there MGIB for the the first 2 years? Is it an easy process? Do they assist with paper work or do you have to do it on your own?

The going rate effective 8/08 is $1,321.00 a month. You can go to the VA website and fill out 100% of the required paperwork. If you want, you can also get it direct deposited or a paper check if you prefer. They'll tell you that it takes about 6-8 weeks for the first check to come and rest assured, it will take every bit of that. They're always gonna be a month behind. You'll receive your august payment in September and so on. They're very easy to deal with on the phone and there's little to no wait time.
You get on their VA website at the end of each month, like the last day and verify by clicking a box stating that you're still enrolled. Its really easy, just takes forever to get it rolling.
Apply for and manage the VA benefits and services you’ve earned as a Veteran, Servicemember, or family member—like health care, disability, education, and more.
This is the link to get you started. You can also reach it from the main VA site.

It'll take about 20 minutes to plug in your address and school or course information. The school or academy staff must then do something similar to verify that you're actually enrolled. Here's a good chart to let you know exactly what you'll be getting and for how long. You can also collect their benefits once you're working as well for the first year or two for a reduced amount. Check it out here:
Just be patient. It takes forever to get rolling in but its worth it. Remember, we served, paid into it, and we earned it. Hope that helped.

they will have a brief for those elegible while in the academy
some crusty old va guy will come and tell you war stories, ignore him, grab the paperwork, sign/get it signed and get it to buffalo
towards the end of the academy it will be another va brief by another annoying old guy that was never in the service...grab the paperwork from him( you need a new form since the $ rates change post-academy) and do all the same steps. this form has to be signed by an official at your precinct of assignment ( usually a training lt or sgt) and then forward it to beefalo again

while in the academy you'd get the same full time rate as if you were in college, then every 6 months it goes down a tad bit.
don't quote me on the monthly numbers, but they look something like this :
academy $1100
next 6 months $800
6 months $650
6 months $460
not a bad boost considering that it's not taxable income, so a nice chunk of change over the regular rookies

well there are 4 different levels of the GI bill. And you get 6 months of each one. Those numbers aren't 100% but they a good ballpark estimate.NYPD
