Yes it is political, they have both civil and criminal investigators, pay is ok but i believe it take forever to max out (something like 11 steps ) and never know when you're going to get your next step. They have no unions.

NJ residency is required.

You would also have to go the tha academy in sea girt. Might be able to go thru the waiver program.
