  • Police Officer Age requirement

So the State of New Jersey has this non sense that once your 35, you are no longer suitable to be a police officer in the state. Other states will take you at any age as long as you can pass all the required steps. Has someone over 35 ever tried to challenge this unfair age requirement?

You cant be a municipal police officer over 35 due to the PFRS retirement requirement. You can still work as sheriff's officer or campus police officer but be placed into a different retirement, PERS.

Yes there have been lawsuits and they have not been successful.

Believe it or not, the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) exempts fire fighters, emergency medical personnel, and police officers from the federal ban on age limits and employment. The law authorizes state and local governments to establish mandatory retirement ages of at least 55, as well as maximum hiring ages.

This is a young persons profession. You're hired for a 25, now 30 year career. The average 65-70yr old can't handle the physical rigors of this job.
Being a good street cop is like coming to work in a wet suit and peeing in your pants. It's a nice warm feeling, but you're the only one who knows anything has happened.

I think NJDOC hires well over 35. It is a pretty good job maxing out around 100,000.

Nope. Can't be over 35. NJDOC is in PFRS, which is what the age requirement comes from.
