Here in New Jersey, a person can be sentenced from 30 years to up to life in prison with a 30 year parole ineligibility for murder. The sentence can be life, 50 years, 40 years or whatever but they must serve 30 years. In certain circumstances, a person can get life with no parole. For instance, if a person kills an LEO in the performance of his duties or because of his status as an LEO, it's life do life.

N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3 subsection b. covers the sentencing range.
