CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire now has 48 new police officers who are ready to go on duty throughout the state. These recruits spent 14 weeks in a paramilitary academy. They could leave on Friday afternoon to go home and spend time with there families. Back on Mondays at 5:30 AM for another week of training.
The 142nd class of the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy graduated on Friday night in Concord in front of proud friends and family members.
The officers come from different backgrounds, and each has a different inspiration for what led him or her to law enforcement.
Officer Richard Valenti Jr., of Manchester, said he was inspired by his own father, Capt. Richard Valenti, who has been a Manchester police officer for several years.
"Since I was 5 years old I remember seeing my father in that uniform, and I knew that's what I wanted to do," said Valenti.
Officer Stacey Seluk became a mother of three before her children inspired her to become a police officer.
"I wanted to help protect my children and other people's children," said Seluk.
"I think it's great. I think it's a hard job for a woman, and I'm really proud she did this," said Seluk's daughter, Devin.
Some of the graduates served in the military overseas and now want to serve here at home.
Officer George Mottram of the Londonderry police said all of the graduates will step into public service with officers like Manchester's Michael Briggs on their minds. Briggs was shot and killed on the job in October. The N H State Police have 5 new Troopers.
