  • Reno PD

    Hello All,

I am interested in applying to Reno from out of state (California). I would be interested in hearing anything/everything anybody has to offer regarding the department...especially regarding training/academy, reputation, pay, assignments, morale, leadership, crime, retirement, community, hiring process, etc. I would also like to hear maybe a little about this departments policing philosophy if someone wouldn't mind sharing.

    Thanks.

    Just watch Reno 911!

In all honesty though, it might be tough to get an answer, I dont think I've seen any Reno guys on here.

      HockeyFan,

Here is the recruitment page for Reno PD:

That should answer a lot of your questions. As far as I know their reputation is good. BigTrooper could probably answer that one better. I tested for them in May but just missed the sit-ups. You don't get nearly the break between each section of the test as with the other agencies I have tested for around here, so I wasn't expecting that. I do know that they have a "community policing" philosophy. If you do a search of rgj.com you will come up with some good news stories. There is one neighborhood that had a major crime problem. They have placed an officer there full-time that actually walks the beat like in the old days and it has reduced the crime there tremendously. As far as crime, I think that Sparks is worse off. Reno is switching to driving the Chargers instead of the CVPI's, if that makes any difference to you
      .
I don't know that I could answer any better, the recruitment page will answer a lot of the questions.

I appreciate the responses thus far. Robinsonchuck, Can you recall about how many people were testing when you were in the process? Even better did they comment on how many they anticipated hiring at that time?

        Thanks.

          HockeyFan,

There were about 40 people at my test. I think they said were about 7 different groups that day and the tests go for about 3 days. Many of us got washed out during the PT test (especially sit-ups). I'm sure many more got washed out in the written test as it is extensive. At least they give you a study guide for that to know what to watch out for. Since I didn't get that far, I can't tell you how close it is to the sample. The test should happen again in November and probably accept applications in September.

The November testing is still to be determined. They had so many for the May testing that it might not happen, they have like 3 pages of names to go through. They gave up this last academy for the sheriff's office, so next academy might all ready be filled. RPD is a good place to work, a lot of good guys. BUSY, they don't have a lot of time for traffic, all house calls. Not the best place for issued equipment, but it keeps the budget low.

I did the physical and written for RPD last October and am now in the current Academy (5th week). It is mostly a WCSO Academy and there are only a few of us RPD guys in there.

The RPD officers and detectives that I have met so far have been top notch. Excellent group of men and women to work with.

                Moto9696,

If you don't mind I would be interested in hearing what kind of background in terms of education and/or military experience you and your fellow Reno recruits share? I would also be interested in hearing how much notice they provided you from the time of hire till the academy start date?

                Congrats on getting picked up.

                  Thanks!

I did 4 years in the Marine Corps and have another 16 with the NV Air National Guard. Education wise, I have my BS in engineering. 4 others in the Academy have prior military and I would say half of the Academy have 4 year degrees in one field or another. Hope this helps and hit me up on any other questions you may have.
