  • Got my conditional offer

I've been in process with NV DPS and was called by the NHP to say that I had passed the hiring board and that they would like me to join their division. Well, I received the conditional offer in the mail today which outlines my progression through Phase II of the testing process (poly, drug, psych, and med). Once I pass those hurdles, the Academy begins in January. Upon graduation, I will then be assigned to the Southern Command - Las Vegas.

I am extremely happy about my success so far, and hope and pray the process continues to go as smoothly as it has so far. Given the fact that I will be assigned to the Las Vegas area, I would really like to hear any advice / comments from current LEO's about living and working in the Vegas area. I had worked in Vegas for a couple days every couple of months, so I am pretty well familiar with the area, but have never thought it would become my full time residency. So any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.

The rest of your testing should go by fast. Vegas is a busy place. The construction projects on I-15 don't help matters much either. Did they offer you any rural posts?

      congratulations

I'm glad to finally hear from someone on here was able to make it through. May I ask how long it took from the time you got your background in? Are you in the academy here in Carson? I got my background in last week and am hoping to hear soon.

Yes, some rural posts were offered. If I remember correctly, Tonopah, Austin, Ely, West Wendover, and I think one or two others were possible posts. But since I live the Cason/Tahoe/Reno area with my family, those rural areas were just too far for a commute, and after talking with a couple current and former NHP Officers, Vegas offered the best combination of working opportunities, self development (i.e. going to take supplemental self defense), and I have some friends who live there. Plus, it's a fairly cheap flight to fly back into Reno/Carson to visit the family whenever I get the chance.

        I'll PM you on that.

Good choice as long as Vegas suits you. I will give you a suggestion. If you can manage it, offer to work before the academy. You will be able to meet several people and get a general feeling of the Department.

Robinson- The academy in Carson City is the only active DPS academy at this time.

Jan. 2010 is the next scheduled academy.

Yea, I'd like to work before the academy, but my poly isn't scheduled until mid November, so best case for me would be to get hired on right after Thanksgiving working 'light duty' out of the Reno office (since I am Carson) before starting the academy. My advantage is that training facility here in Carson is literally easy walking distance from my house.

Hopefully it all works out. Nothing like PT in the coldest time of year. Living that close...you better start running that hill....LOL.

Congrats!! I'm on the longer list of people with DPS (those who didn't make it through backgrounds) but just got hired by another agency here in southern NV.

We are starting right away and I'm sure it gets colder up in Carson but, being from NJ, I must agree that a true "winter" academy would be no fun. I imagine a summer academy in the desert wouldn't be much fun either.

Good luck in the academy and beyond!!!!

Yup, that 'hill' is just about a daily run for me. I've seen the last academy running right in front of my house many a time, and now, it will be me running in front of my house, as my wife stands and waves. Guess everyone will be coming to my house for dinner. LOL.

And yes, PT will suck, but I'm not sure starting in July would have been any better, just the other end of the spectrum, and you can always add layers, once your running in the heat, you can only strip down so far.

My TO's at the academy didn't like to run too much. I had to join the Carson Gold's Gym to keep in shape! The January academy has a new captain. It should be very militaristic, college atmosphere is being thrown out the window. You will have required dorm living with a curfew. Las Vegas is a great learning station. It is very fast paced... 2 to 3 accident investigations per shift (each), raging lunatic drivers, more warrants and drunks then you can shake a stick at. After a couple of years here, you will be prepared to work anywhere. Good luck with the rest of your process. Once you get past polygraph (a huge hurdle) your are home free.

Exactly what MoonDoggy said....the new leadership wants to change the academy. I feel for you though. The dorm at the colony is in bad shape. At least you will be close to home.

I am testing next month for DPS on the 16th in Vegas. I am curious on one thing I am currently in the Police Academy in Utah and I graduate on Dec.30. If I was to get on with DPS what is the training process like for certified/certifiable officers out of state. Also what is this talk of working before you start the academy? Any help or pointers are appreciated.

You will have to ask the staff that conduct your test about Utah/Nevada POST questions. Normally if you are hired on with experience, you will have to complete a lateral academy and NHP specific training. The lateral academy is slightly shorter than the normal academy. Why are you trying to test out of Utah already?
