"No apparent brain damage".....classic. Yeah, not too may people left on the department that probably know who he is, me included.
Might be a couple people upstairs...

Gary was also the interim chief in the period between Bob Wadman's
termination and when Jim Skinner was appointed. This incident would
have happened during the second class of 1978, so anyone with a
serial number in the early 900 series would remember. Long before
your time, young fella.

haha This stuff happens and all you can do is chuckle as long as you aren't involved. We all screw up and if this is as bad as it gets, they're ahead of the game. Well handled and my guess is that whoever OK'd the signs will never live to forget it. lol

I remember when Gary Crinklaw (later an assistant chief) was a
sergeant up in training. They had taken a recruit class up to the
Press Club to meet some of the media. Gary placed a small auto
pistol in his back pocket. The thing discharged and put a round
through one of his cheeks. The next day, an anatomy report form
was displayed in the elevator showing the bullet path with the
following narrative: "No appearent brain damage."

The incident couldn't have happened in the worst place, so all of
the media could cover the incident. Funny !!

Omaha Police Violate Law With Signs

OMAHA, Neb. -- The signs appeared on light poles along Omaha's 13th Street
early Thursday. And by Thursday evening, they were gone.

They were posters advertising positions with the Omaha Police Department.
The white fliers with color photos were the work of police recruiters who likely
thought they'd catch the attention of thousands of visitors attending the
College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.

"Equal opportunity employer," the poster stated.

But there was a problem. The signs were posted illegally.

The KETV Newswatch 7 I-Team brought it to the attention of Omaha police
and City Councilman Garry Gernandt, a former Omaha police officer.

"Oops," said Gernandt, when he learned about the signs posted in the city's
right-of-way.

It's one of Gernandt's pet peeves. He said he was a little embarrassed
because the Omaha city code specifically prohibits any signs on public
property.

"What's that going to cause? Rear-end accidents, dangerous situations. It's
put in the code for just that reason," said Gernandt.

Public information officer Sgt. Teresa Negron said as soon as the department
realized it had posted the signs in error, they were removed.

It's still unknown whether police will cite themselves for the violation.

"They wouldn't have to go very far, would they?" said Gernandt, laughing.
Gernandt said police usually give a warning to violators before ticketing them.
