    Martinez named Nebraska U.S. marshal

    Published Monday December 28, 2009

    Martinez named U.S. marshal

Mark Martinez, who retired in March as an Omaha Police Department deputy chief, has been named U.S. marshal for the District of Nebraska.

Martinez has been serving on Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle's security detail. He also serves on the Omaha school board.

Martinez's appointment was approved by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 24.

“Mark Martinez has had a very impressive career in law enforcement which will help him carry out his new duties with professionalism and distinction," said U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., whose office announced the appointment.

Martinez joined the Omaha Police Department in 1984. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Marshals are appointed for four-year terms and recommended by the senior member of Congress from the president's political party, in this case Nelson, who, like Suttle and President Barack Obama, is a Democrat. Obama nominated Martinez to the post in September.

Congratulations Mark! Mark has been a friend of mine since I was about 12 years old, he will do a good job.
