St. Louis County Police vs. JCSD

I'm looking for career progression possibilities and differences between St. Louis County Police and the Jefferson County Sheriffs. I understand County is larger, but what kind of opportunities exist outside of patrol, if you choose to pursue those? Also, any differences between the two's detective bureau's? Any information would be appreciated.
