  • L.A.P.D. installs memorial to officers killed in line of duty

The Los Angeles Police Department today is installing a memorial for fallen officers at its new downtown administration building.

Motor officers plan to meet the truck bringing the nearly 11,000-pound memorial wall from Kansas City at Rosemead Boulevard and the 10 Freeway at about 10:30 a.m., said Officer Sara Faden, a spokeswoman for the LAPD. They will escort the wall to the new Police Administration Building on West 1st Street, where a crane will lift it into position.

The names of the 202 LAPD officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty are carved into some of the 2,000 brass plaques that make up the wall, Faden said.

The San Francisco-based architecture firm Gensler donated its services to design the wall, which was built by the A. Zahner Co. in Kansas City. The memorial was boxed and loaded on a trailer Friday for the trip to California.

In a show of support for fellow officers, Kansas City police escorted the memorial out of town, Faden said.

The police command, relatives of the fallen, elected officials and donors will gather at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 to formally dedicate the memorial wall.
