  • Mo. judge rejects lawsuit over deputy sheriff pay

    http://www.bnd.com/336/story/926188.html

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A Missouri judge has rejected a challenge to a state law designed to bring in revenue to raise the pay and benefits of sheriffs' deputies.

Cole County Circuit Judge Richard Callahan upheld the constitutionality of the 2008 law in his ruling Wednesday.

The measure instructs sheriffs to collect an extra $10 fee for serving legal documents. The fees move through county treasurers' offices into a special state account to finance higher salaries and benefits for deputies.

St. Charles and St. Louis counties filed suit over the law. They argued that under the Missouri Constitution, proceeds from the new fee should go directly to the county where the money was collected.

Missouri lawmakers approved the measure after learning that deputies in 91 counties were paid so little in 2007 that some qualified for public assistance such as food stamps.

Go figure...eastern part of the state. They don't care because they have some pretty strong unions in St. Louis area.

It's an utter disgrace. No leo anywhere should have to depend on food stamps. Stop filing lawsuits, this change is needed in Missouri.

I work security and make more than the local Deputies, and that is after losing $1.25 an hr by switching to days. Their pay sucks bigtime.

You would think the number of applicants would go down or cease to exist. Are they lying about their pay or what? I'd think someone would do a little research as to how much they were going to be paid? As for the deputies that currently work there, do they not have a ton of them leaving?

We are about to get hammered unless a tax passes. We have a current sales tax in place which was used to build our jail and staff it. The commission could have taken care of this two years ago but decided not to. Now, if this tax fails we have to cut 33 jobs from our department.
