    DOT-RAILS INSPECTOR TRAINEE
    Characteristics of Work
    This is entry level work in enforcement of laws and regulations governing the operation of railroads and
    railroad companies. Employees in positions allocated to this job class assist with inspecting all
    equipment, right of way, roadbeds and tracks to ensure compliance with state law and the safety rules
    and regulations of the Department of Transportation; investigating complaints of the Department of
    Transportation; investigating complaints of safety violations and charges of unlawful preference,
    concession, rebates, and discrimination in tariff rates; investigating derailments and accidents at railroad
    crossings to determine cause, and recommending any necessary remedial action to prevent future
    accidents. Work is performed under the close supervision of a journeyman or senior level rails
    inspector. This class differs from other levels in that incumbents in this classification may not make
    arrests, issue warnings, testify in court cases, or take any independent action in the enforcement of
    state law and the rules and regulations promulgated by the Transportation Commission.
    Examples of Work
    The following are examples of work performed for positions in this job class, and are not intended to
    reflect the essential functions of any one position. The essential functions of each individual position
    are determined and maintained by each individual agency.
    Assists with investigations of reported violations of Mississippi law and rules and regulations
    promulgated by the Transportation Commission concerning railroads and rail companies'
    operations.
    Assists with inspection of railroad tracks and rail beds to ensure compliance with safety
    regulations.
    Assists with inspection to ensure repairs are done in accordance with applicable regulations and
    contracts.
    Assists with surveying of railroad crossings to ensure proper working condition of warning
    devices such as signs, signal lights, traffic barriers.
    Related or similar duties are performed as required or assigned.
    Minimum Requirements
    Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED).
