  • Sheriff's Deputy Charged With Stalking

MILACA, MN -- The Milaca Police investigate their fair share of cases, but it’s not so often they investigate another officer. But that’s what had to happen when a woman came forward, accusing Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Deputy James Osowski of stalking her for two years.
In the police report, the basis for Osowski’s two harassment charges is outlined. His ex-girlfriend, unnamed in the report, says after the two ended their four-year on-and-off relationship in 2004, Osowski continued to contact her. He used text messages, voice mails and sometimes printed material to reach her, starting out loving. As time passed, the messages became much more hurtful and then became threatening.

In a period of 6 months, Osowski made more than 1,500 calls to his ex-girlfriend. He also drove by her home and made threats.

Finally, in December 2006, the ex-girlfriend contacted the police, who began an investigation.

Milaca Police Chief Michael Mott says the hard part about the case is Osowski’s job. “It makes it uncomfortable but you have to put that aside and approach it as you would any other investigation.”

Since a restraining order was put in place, Osowski has not contacted his ex-girlfriend. Osowski, who has worked for the Sheriff’s Department for more than a decade, was charged with two counts of harassment, including one felony charge because of a pattern of behavior threatening bodily harm to his victim. He is now on paid administrative leave as his case is investigated further.
