I would not complain about having ANYTHING in your squad car. We JUST FINALLY got shotguns in our squads. If there was a "tactical" situation the only thing we would have had was our service gun -- my case a Glock 17.
Be happy with what you have cause some don't have anything.

Don't even get me started. In the summer of 01 I think it was, there were 5 cops shot in the twin cities area, all of which were engaged with long guns if I am not mistaken. Gosh knows the outstate guys/gals need long guns to go prairie dog hunting, or shoot deer with the old m14's some of them were issued. You wouldn't want the equipment in the areas where it would be used.
You are right, at least we get the 40 cal handguns (and .357 backups)

As one police chief I know says my pistol is only used so I can fight my way to my real weapon my M4. Then you have depts like a certain sheriffs dept.....870s only! of course they are only matched by a certain rust brown colored dept that has rifles in all their cars EXCEPT the Metro area....or my agency that is only issued pistols. In my opinion you should have both the rifle and the shotgun.
Oh and by the way if you are saying that the shot gun is soooooooooo cool cause when you "rack it everyone knows what that is and bad guys just **** all over themselves to give up" are full of BS. If you are in a tatical situation and you rack that weapon you just gave away your position...that weapon should have a round chambered as soon as possible going into a confronation....not to mention that me personally I know I can shoot the M16/AR15/M4 series of weapons very well...I am just not a fan of shotguns. They have their place but as a backup to the rifle.
How do you really feel?

Ummm the 6,8 round is not a proven round, and while it is being much toted by the gun makers almost no ammo is avaible and I seriously doubt that the 6.8 is being used in any numbers.
The .223 or 5.56 round is a good round...which agency has .40 MP5s in their squads?

The .223 is not bad for LE purposes.
We do not have the same restrictions that the military does regarding which ammo we can use...a lot of the military uses that green tip stuff. Great if I want to jack you through some body armor, not so great if I want to jack a real skinny guy or gal as it will go right through and not yaw, or break up, which would cause the soft tissue damage.
Also, the ranges we deal with in LE are shorter, hence the .223 ballistically is decent, even when fired from short barreled carbines.

Not sure - but I know I have seen more than my fair share of H&K MP5's - which is usually the same caliber of the officer's side arm. For instance - One suburban PD that I am a reserve officer at has MP5's chambered in .40 and they issue .40 sidearms. - I think it's a money thing......1 bullet size for many weapons - you can buy in bulk.
Besides I'm not that impressed with the AR-15 or M-4 chambered in the .223 round (it's considered a varmit round)......the soldiers over seas hate it for it's lack of stopping power which is why a lot of the special forces are switching to the 6.8 mm round - which is a modified .270 dear hunting round (I think - so all of the gun know-it-alls will be able to correct me if I am wrong.)

Twin Cities Area Agencies Use Rifles?
I was just wondering if any of you know any agencies in MN that carry rifles in the squad cars. Do most? Or most don't? I just have no idea. When I did my ride along in St. Paul the officer i rode with said that some of the squads carry AR15's, but most don't. Does State Patrol? I know its a radom question, but I'm just curious because I don't see many here, but when I was in Santa Monica EVERY squad had an AR15 and a Remington 870. ThanksTags: None
