  • Minneapolis Looks To Detroit For New Officers

Here is a new twist on things: "The trip to Detroit is just part of the city's effort to hire 71 new officers. The first group will start training in the fall."

I may get some flak here on this but I can't remain silent. I DO NOT APPROVE - Minnesota is the hardest state to get hired in and Minneapolis is the largest department.......There are a lot of good, qualified, applicants in this state who have put in 2 to 4 years just to graduate along with passing through all of the hoops the state of MN has just to become a cop.

The 71 open positions that Minneapolis has could be filled 3 times over with just the amount of graduates who haven't been hired by an agency as of yet. Do we really need to go and import people from another state when we have so many qualified people here to begin with?

From what I've been reading tonight about the Detroit PD, I'm not very happy about being a resident of this crap hole city.

If I remember right, they were getting dope off some of the cops hired from detroit and whatnot.

The city is trying to beef up the number of cops on the street and that effort is now at the center of the race for mayor.

A group of African American Minneapolis police went to Detroit last week to recruit experienced officers of color.

But, some community leaders said they are critical. Of 19 recently hired officers, 17 are white.

Here is a question and maybe it can be most acurately described to me by someone who is a Mpls Police Officer - just who are these "community leaders" anyway - who elected them and what creditials do they offer? Do they offer any support to the police or are they just there to b*tch when they even remotely think a "white MPD officer" has done anything wrong.

I say a white officer because every time I hear of a non-white MPD officer accused of anything - I don't hear a peep. But when it's a white officer, they come out of the wood work to "voice their concern".

I really don't like when things get this way because it has a negative effect on everyone. One department where I was a Reserve Officer for had received complaints because we did not have any "officers of color" on the department. The chief who was close to retiring basically said - when I have 300 people applying for one job and 299 of them are white and the remaining 1 is "of color" who doesn't meet the state's mandated requirments to be a law enforcement officer what do you want me to do?

                      Oh well.

One more thing - who ever they bring in from Detroit regardless who they are (African-American, White, Asian,) I would like to know their background, I am mainly concerned with how long they have been a LEO, What college education they have, and what commendations and/or disiplinary actions.

Take this article with a grain of salt; it means nothing.
A group of black police officers going to Detriot to recruit black officers. I would be concened if Minneapolis PD recruiters were going to Detriot, or placing ads in Detriots newpapers, or putting up billboards in Detriot "Black Police Officers in Detriot : Come to Minnesota to Fill Our Affirmative Action Quota!". It's just a bunch of black officers with the backing of "Community Leaders" trying to raise a stink about something.
The stink worked - as Caroline Lowe picked up the story and created a big hooplah. As it appears it did in this post.
Otherwise, I do not believe that the Official Minneapolis PD is recruiting from Detriot. However, if they need to fill the Affirmative Action quota they may have to look elsewhere for minority applicants. I have not seen to many minority or black students, or applicants in the LEO career search. Minnesota is predomintely a non-minority place.

ONE POINT I WANT TO GET ACROSS: I AM NOT RACIST, OR EVER WILL BE. So, read that all you quick to accuse "your doin this or say'en that cause I black"
We intimidate those who intimidate others.

What a coincidence! Shortly after this story broke, I seen the following on officer.com's home page about Detroit laying off 150 cops.

that isnt so much a coincidence. that lay off has been in the works for awhile now. When i was in detroit for a wedding in may, they were talking about laying off more than that. I guess they are doing some restrucuring in the dept to only have to lay off 150. the number i hear while in michgan was 400 or so. these layoff are nothing new
