I was looking through the hunting regs and saw that you can now transport a unloaded uncased firearm while hunting.

The new law says a person may transport unloaded, uncased firearms in vehicles -- including ATVs -- while at a shooting range, while lawfully hunting on private or public land or "while traveling to or from a site the person intends to hunt lawfully that day or has hunted lawfully that day," unless they are:

    • Within Anoka, Hennepin or Ramsey counties.

    • Within an area where the discharge of a firearm has been prohibited, such as towns or municipalities.

    • Within the boundaries of a city with a population of 2,500 or more.

    • On school grounds or in areas otherwise restricted under other laws.

I think those are the two big ones right there - the first one would be tricky to know for sure unless you look at all the city ordinances of every area you plan to drive through on the way to and from your stand, the second pretty much rules out the majority of cities/towns in the 7-county metro area, as well as a decent number of towns elsewhere in the state.

Essentially this new reg means you can drive through your corn field or in the middle of nowhere with your gun unloaded and uncased - as far as driving through towns, I'd personally just take the 5 seconds to unload and case up, rather than finding and reading different ordinances and laws set forth by townships etc.

Im heading out to SD this weekend for Pheasant. It's like the wild west out there. I think shooting out of vehicles is a little far but it is annoying in MN to have to unload AND case everytime you move to a new field. Having the gun unloaded is important to citizen safety, driver safety, and officer safety. Having the gun cased is in my opinion irrelevant.
