Michigan is pretty diverse in regards to social layers, population centers, and even weather. If you like snow, the closer to Lake Michigan and the Upper Pennisula you are, the more you get. There are some very remote areas of the state (nearest neighbor a couple miles away), and some very dense population zones (Detroit, Grand Rapids). As someone pointed out earlier, if you are a sportsman, you will enjoy Michigan.

Downside is the job situation here; if you are coming with a spouse, there are only a few work niches that are still strong (medical, certain engineering jobs, etc). If you have school age children, you have alot of options to look at, and can do a fair amount of research on-line, regarding local school districts, private schools or charter schools. Land values and housing are good buys right now.

hope that helps. keep us posted.

Go with the best of both and refer to it as soda pop. We call everything a coke around here. Then they ask what kind and I say sprite. Wierd.....

Well, coming from Indiana by way of Illinois, I just say "coke."

Or west. Grand Rapids, Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven, even Kalamazoo are all nice. Stay away from Jackson if you can help it.

I do have a soft spot in my heart for Traverse City and Petosky.

    You're either a U of M fan or a MSU fan.
You must be a Detroit Redwings fan.
You have to be a Lions fan. ha ha.

    Dress warm.

Be ready for snow, at anytime.

The farther North you go, the better it is.

    Don't say soda.

    Welcome to MI

Ok if you are moving to Michigan it must be for a federal job, right? Here's the skinny on Michigan and Southeast if you are moving there.

Michigan is a great state if you like to hunt, fish, spend time on the water etc. You can go to some great places on either coast within about a 3hr drive. Detroit has it's problems but it's a big sports town and we don't like losers. The new Comerica Park (Tigers) and Ford Field (Lions) are exceptional. If you like hockey you are coming to the right place. The Red Wings rule and Joe Louis arena is nice. The Fox Theater has great entertainment. Housing prices are way down so you should be able to pick up a good deal and if you want a summer place up-north a lot are going back on forclosure so you can get them real cheap.

Also, if you have to drive into Detroit from Florida the traffic shouldn't be bad because its all heading south.
