  • HCPD Take home cars

I saw on the news tonight that the county executive was eliminating take home's for you guys. I didn't think you had them to begin with but, if you did, do you think this will hurt recruitment and retention? If so, to what degree?

I'm thinking he means Howard... I was aware that they did have take-homes.
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

    I Am the Sheepdog.

      Sorry, Howard County.

I didn't see that. I just heard they were reducing the spread of the program. I.e., out of county officers are not getting them...

Howard County is not eliminating their take-home program. They might have it modified where no one new will receive a take-home, but officers with current vehicles will not get those taken from them. There was an article in the paper this morning saying HCPD is reducing their vehicle use by 5% and the plan for that was to reduce the amount of use and mentioned use off-duty. Whatever that means I do not know.

When I left there in 2003, all officers that lived in the county, regardless of rank or assignment, had take-homes. All officers on call had them, even if they lived outside of the county. All command staff (LT and higher) had them, again regardless. They added Sgt.'s to the out of county take-homes and they always said it would be rescinded as needed, but I never saw that happen. From what I read, it seems like they are simply placing tighter restrictions on those who lived out of county and had them based on on-call status or supervisory rank (Sgt.'s). Might not be 100% accurate, but that is what I remember reading...
