  • Thinking about Maryland Law Enforcement

I am a California Law Enforcement officer and am thinking about moving back to my home state of Maryland. Had some questions about Queen Annes County Sheriff and Maryland State Police. I am used to flying around the county in a unit solo, so I figured these two departments would be similar. Are laterals excepted and would I have to attend another Academy or is there a re certification test that you can take.

I believe with MSP you'd have to go through their academy, which is 6 months live in. I'm not sure about your certification transferring over or much about Queen Annes. I'll let more knowledgeable individuals address those topics.

I hear MSP is considering hiring laterals. It might take up to 5yrs to implement tho.
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

A lot of places in MD are doing away with their lateral/comparative compliance programs. Anne Arundel County might still do some comparative classes, but I'm not sure if they've done away with it yet. I think most places now will make you go through the whole 6 month academy, but will usually pay you at a higher rate.

It was my understanding that when Sheridan was the Cheif in Balto. Co. he did not like the lateral idea...I'd be really surprised if he allows the state to start with it.

I don't think MSP will ever start hiring laterals.

All new hires are required to go thru the MSP Academy. Previous LEO experience or not.

MdTA still has their lateral program in place.
