    Sureno are Mexican Gangs.

MS-13 are originally El Salvadorian. Stands for La Mara Salvatrucha (sp?) which roughly means Salvadorian Army...or something like that.

Sureno's (Southerners) is a generic term Hispanic gang members from Southern California consider themselves. Here in Southern California, Hispanic gangs consider themselves Sureno's as opposed to Norteno's (Northerners). Most consider Bakersfield the line that divides north and south (14 vs. 13). The Mexican Mafia (eMe) prison gang, for the most part, influences and in some cases controls all Sureno gangs (collect drug taxes,,carry out hit's on the street, in the county jails and inside prison ect..) All Sureno's are basically used by eMe. Used to collect taxes and carry out murders ect.. If your a southerner in, for example, prison,,, and a directive comes down by an eMe member for you to kill or discipline someone,,that person (Sureno) is required to carry out the order, or be killed themself. The Nuestra Familia (NF) or Nothern Structure has the same type of influence over Hispanic gangs north of Bakersfield.

I can't speak on how gangs in other states took the term "Sureno" and added there own little spin to it, so for me it's unclear if there is a Hispanic gang called "Sureno's" in other states. A "Sureno" here isn't gang specific, and doesn't tell you much because everyone down here is a Sureno.

As for Mara Salvatrucha, I know they started in the early 70's around MacArthur Park and Rampart area of L.A. As they formed, they began to rival other more established traditional Hispanic gangs. 18th Street Gang became there #1 rival, and still is. They basically became a major problem as they migrated all over the U.S. It's funny because here in the Inland Empire,,Riverside/San Bernardino area, we haven't seen a large presence of MS.
