  • 30-45 minutes with clear roads and no traffic. Traffic in Maryland is notoriously bad, especially coming into Baltimore. You need to look at places much, much closer. I live in Baltimore city proper, and it takes me a good 20 minutes to get from my apartment to downtown Baltimore... and that's on a good day, with little congestion. Pasadena is still too far, imo...

Guess we'll find out just how blue my blood runs after PSI does their thing. Anything goes in pursuit of the badge...

Id disagree....people drive 45/60 miles plus to work in DC.....its no better/worse then going into Bmore everyday. Drive and look where you are comfortable

        • I agree with Chiller find a place where you feel comfortable living and has things to do on your off time. If you are young and single you might want to live in the city for a little bit to be close to the academy and enjoy city life. After that is done though bounce to the burbs to raise a family. Good luck

              • Hey Irish I took it about a month ago its not hard to pass at all just follow the directions your told. Even if you mess up the instructor will just explain and show everything to you again. I was with a large group and no one had any trouble passing.

                    1. housing, i looked at places like Annapolis and found reasonable pricing for rent for one bedroom, is this a low crime, good area.
                    2. how much would i be looking at after pension contributions and taxes.
                    3. what is the maximum pay after 5 years, and how much does it go up after that, and are there chances for advancement to sgt. or lt.
                    4. what are the health benefits like and what percentage is the pension after retirement, is it 50% or does itr go up the longer your otj.
                    1. Annapolis isn't that far. I commute about the same distance from the north. Annapolis, like other cites has it's issues. But you will have to pay the toll (40 cents on the commuter plan).
                    2. After taxes and deductions, approximately +/- $1,200 biweekly.
                    3. Close to/a little over $50k? I have to check the pay scale. As for advancement to Sgt., it doesn't seem that difficult to meet the requirements (based on observation).
                    4. Health benefits are similar to other places. Look on the BPD website for more information. As for the pension, 50% as far as I know. And no, it doesn't increase. Actually, there is speculation that there will be a temporary reduction in pension contributions (I heard 2%) along with another extension of the current 2% reduction in pay currently in effect. And I would fully expect the benefits to be reduced over a career. The city is broke, too many of its occupants are a drain on the system and far too few contribute in a positive way in the form of taxes etc. No matter what others say, EXPECT the retirement to change to 25 years and maybe 30 over the coming years. And expect a reduced pension. (He who has the gold makes the rules).

I'm trying to schedule to go down this coming Monday for the written psych and interview... Any help on what to expect? I know it's roughly 800 questions give or take... And multiple choice, right? Oh, and they did tell us that there's an academy at the end of April, and another in July. Hope that helps people!

1.) for me, annapolis would be too far and traffic on 50 east sucks on fridays. if the apartment is down off of Aris T Allen Blvd, that traffic always sucks. I commute from pasadena and its not bad. takes me 20-30 minutes to get into the eastern at 3:30 and 15 to get home at 12am. Plan on an hour commute to the academy from Annapolis, and leave 1.5 hours early everyday. 695 is a killer all day.
2.)1000-1100ish. theres no one answer to this. it depends on which health plans you pick, etc... Promotion is likely, if you study and are a good test taker. you are start testing for Sgt after 3 years and the test is given every 2 years. About 40-60 Sgts get promoted every 2 years. close to 300 test for it.
3.) 54,125 base pay after 5 years, or 55,553 with a degree.... FOP3.org, look at the unit I contract.
4.)i have carefirst blue cross blue shield. its great. $10 copay, $15 specialist, and no referrals needed. Currently, the pension is in limbo. there is a federal lawsuit happening now. the pension was 50% after 20 years and 2% for each additional year. now, the city wants it to be 50% after 25 years.

not to start a war, but east side, how much time do you have on? your answers to the pension question is way off. no increase? its always been 2% increase for each year over 20 and no talks to change that. retirees generally get a cost of living increase as well.

knowing your pension and pay are the most important things to learn on this job.

I'm assuming they're talking about the free one from say, Equifax, and just print out the three in one credit report and then the credit scores from all three? (pretty sure the officers down down said you dont have to pay any money for it.) Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
this is true. the free one works.

                              • My Women's Recruitment experience was similar... A lot of the women there seemed to have come in because they had nothing better to do that day. It was a little off-putting, since this was my dream, and a job prospect I've taken very seriously. Out of about 20-25 women who were there for the PT test, about 15 were cut out of the group afterward. After that phase, I've often been the only female showing up for testing dates and interviews.

I was psyched yesterday when another female went upstairs with BlueChord and I for final processing, but she was actually there for her Oral Psych, lol. For those of you who have already been--about how many females are sorted into each academy class? I have no issues keeping up with the men, I'm just curious what the mix usually is...

In other news... Hire date is set for the 5th! Can't wait to start learning... and can't wait for the academy. I'm interested to see how far I can push myself.
