I was wondering if anyone here knew about the Howard Co. lateral transfer program? I see that they are having a few up coming test for laterals and I had a few question. I am an out of state police officer in NY, with 4 years on and curious if they will take you from out of state, with out a Maryland cert. Also what is the department like, compared to surrounding PD's, any other info or input would be great too.

You must have a Maryland certification to lateral. The department is outstanding and a great work environment. The biggest advantage we have right now is our County Executive and the Chief are huge supporters of their officers. We are still very stable. Even though sergeants and above were furloughed with general county employees for four days, department heads including the Chief were furloughed an extra day and the elected leaders gave back 5 days of pay to show solidarity with employees. We are very well equipped and the department usually gets the best equipment, with our safety in mind, that money can buy. Any other questions feel free to PM me. -
Howard COunty is a great department. Not a whole lot left to be desired if you work there. The greatest misconception in police work that gets more officers killed is alot of cops are still taught to use the "minimum force necessary". In reality a true professional will always resort to the "Maximum Allowable Force" to resolve a situation. They mean the same thing, however one is a restriction and the other is an empowerment.Comment
