  • Olathe Police Dept Volunteers

I had a quick question. I live in Olathe and I saw on the Olathe website that they have a volunteer program for the police department to push papers, special events, bike patrol, etc.
I was wondering if I should inquire into this. My ultimate goal is to become a police officer. Would this be worth my time? I already work for Jackson County as a Correctional Officer in the jail. Should I just stick with that or will this as a side venture make me look better to a prospective agency? Thank you for any replies.

I would think that corrections experience would trump volunteer experience in terms of trying to be hired. Unless of course you really want to help out the community.

To some extent this is true, but look at it from this angle:

If your goal is to become a police officer with Olathe, then volunteer experience with the department, learning the ins and outs, policies and procedures for their department would put you a step ahead of the competition, and possibly introduce you to the folks that make the big decisions. A favorable position to be in.

Why does it have to be 'either/or'? Being a CO, AND volunteering looks pretty good on a resume, even if Olathe isn't on your horizons...
