    Effective 7/1/2014 the Police Officer Trainee position salary is $39,024.72 per year plus an hourly shift differential for second and third watches. During your training period, you will be scheduled on all of each of the three watches. Hourly shift differential and overtime wages are in addition to the base pay. There are ample opportunities to increase your wages through overtime by working athletic, cultural, or other overtime events on campus.

    In addition to wages, the University of Iowa has a very generous benefit program including health and dental insurance, sick leave, vacation (starting at two weeks per year), twelve paid holidays per year, substantial retirement contributions to TIAA/CREF or IPERS, life insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and pre-tax deductions for dependent care. Police Officer Trainees will be covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the State of Iowa and AFSCME after completing a probationary period.

    Police Officer Minimum Standards

    Selected applicants will be required to undergo a thorough criminal background investigation, psychological, drug, physical fitness, and polygraph testing. Questions about qualifications to be a peace officer in Iowa including physical fitness standards can be found at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy website. Selected applicants will also attend a 14 week training session at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge within one year of date of hire.

    The Application Process

Please click on the Recruitment Packet above for additional information about the application process. A physical agility test is part of the testing requirements for new officers. It is mandatory to attend this test to be considered for the position.
