Ok, I have to ask this in light of recent events in this state. It seems lately that when cops screw up they are doing it in a big way. The latest was this week with the Forest City incident. Aren't we smarter than this? To set fire to your own PD then fight with the investigators to the point they have to shoot you? WTF????

On top of this, the trooper in Olwein, Maynard and Stuart in Des Moines, the Sgt. on my own PD...

WTH is going on? Is our water contaminated?

It is a sign of the times brother.

If you look around the nation..................it is happening everywhere and in all professions-----it just hurts us more when we see it happen to our family members.

We tend to think the background investigation and all the other hoops we jump through to get hired makes the profession immune to the "facts of life", but it doesn't work that way. Reality and "crap happens" still invades our personal lives, and thus effects our professional lives. People change as they mature............sometimes for the best but occasionally for the worse.

The testing we go through is only good as to what HAS happened to us in the past-----------not what will happen in the future (and thus what effects us AFTER we get hired). That is one of the reasons Iowa Law requires a new MMPI with EACH change of department.

As far as why the the above incidents are in the news...........................because it's cops. It's not newsworthy when it is an accountant, stockboy, or Micky D's cook.

+1. Everybody messes up. When a cop does, it is front page news. How many people are arrested for drunk driving every day in this state? When the sheriff gets busted for it, it is plastered everywhere. Another example that really is frustrating me now is the news coverage of the trooper that crashed near Indianola. They are trying to make it seem like he was talking on his cell phone while driving 115 mph for the fun of it rather than trying to apprehend a violator and keep our roads safe. Last thing, we need to keep an eye on each other. If one of your peers is having some problems, make sure they get some help. We need to help each other through tough times before they become tragedies.
