SIGOURNEY, Iowa - A Keokuk County law enforcement officer was shot and killed near Sigourney today, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The suspect was also killed after a standoff with dozen of law enforcement officials.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Jason Marlow said during a press conference that three Keokuk County deputies went to a home in rural Sigourney to make contact with a subject.
The deputies were fired upon from the home when they arrived at the scene. One law enforcement officer from the Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office was shot and later died.
The two other deputies were not injured and retreated from the scene to request help. Dozens of city, county and state law enforcement officers responded to the scene.
According to Marlow, the incident was resolved shortly before 3 p.m. when the suspect was killed.
The names of the deputies involved and the suspect are not being released at this time, Marlow said. No other details were released.
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad issued the following statement in reaction today’s:
“Unfortunately, today again served as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by our brave men and women in law enforcement. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ family and friends, and all those affected by one man’s senseless act of violence today.â€
