  • Elkhart Officer Killed in Skydiving accident

FLORA, Ind. (WLFI/WISH) - A six-year veteran of the Elkhart Police Department fell from around 11,000 feet while skydiving at the Flora Municipal Airport Sunday afternoon.

Police say Cpl. Daniel Drust was skydiving with two of his siblings when he had a malfunction with his primary parachute and became entangled in his secondary chute, preventing deployment.

Police and medical personnel arrived on the scene at around 4:40 p.m. Cpl. Drust was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indiana State Police are conducting an investigation into the death.

Cpl. Drust was 36 years old and was married with no children. He was a 6 year veteran of the Elkhart Police Department and also worked for the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department and Mishawaka PD.
