How are Indiana cops with courtesy in general? I know there's always an exception but as a general rule?

    Prepare for the inevitable flood.

This topic is discussed ad nauseam here and on other forums to the point of it becoming a matter of fellow cop bashing because of the diverse set of experiences and opinions on the matter.

If you are asking is cops will extend a degree of “professional courtesy” to another officer, the answer is so subjective that everyone who chimes in will be both right and wrong.

If you are on the job and run afoul of the law in another part of the country, the best advice is to exercise some discretion and tact if and when you opt to disclose your LE affiliation to the officer who greets you. Bear in mind that just as you would hope an offender who happens to be a cop does; appreciate that sometimes, dependent on the severity of the violation and countless other factors there is no out and a ticket will be forthcoming.

Indiana cops are very courteous; they are also polite, professional and well-trained. If you are referring to 'professional courtesy', never expect, demand or take it for granted, always extend it (if and when possible), and always thank brother officers who are willing to extend it to you.

Ok, I've been a cop long enough to know how to act. I was asking because certain parts of the country it doesn't exist whereas here in the northeast we usually make every attempt to give it. I don't expect it or demand it but it is appreciated.

I wasn't taking a poke at you or implying you didn't know how to act. Please don't take offense.
Most of Indiana has professional, dedicated and courteous officers. There are always exceptions, but for the most part, it isn't like Virginia.

Nobody assumes you don’t know how to act. Most cops will try to help out a fellow officer.

As I and others have said: The matter of ‘IF” you will receive PC from another cop is entirely subjective and cannot be predicted in advance. While the majority of cops will do everything in their power to give a break; there are times and circumstances when regardless of whom you are or where you are from, you will be stroked. Regardless.

All of the comments that will surely flood this posting will be anecdotal at best. Even if a specific cop from Indiana comes here and says you will get a break 99.9999% of the time, he may still end up writing you or another cop. Using myself as an example, I extend to the greatest degree possible a measure of PC to fellow officers; however there have been times when I have written cops for a variety of things and for a variety of reasons....you just never know.

I wasn't taking offense, just stating that i know it was kind of a rookie question but im not a native of that state so i wanted to know the general consensus. If I'm on I 70 going a little fast but not being reckless I'd like to know what to expect. Thanks for the imput!

As already noted: offense neither taken nor intended, but this is entirely a hypothetical and subjective.

I use Virginia as a prime example and because another poster made mention: folks generally view the Virginia Troopers to be without an ounce of PC in their bones, yet I can cite a few recent examples where it was extended above and beyond. At the same time I can cite examples where none was extended despite there being no question that the offending driver was on the job and the violation relatively minor.

PC can vary from minute to minute. Suppose they extend it to the enth degree and tomorrow someone pushes it. The Captain makes clear that it’s on hold until things settle down. I pass through town five minutes later and BAM, I get stroked. This is neither indicative of how things are nor the attitude of the cops in question. See: purely subjective.

I was looking to get an idea of the attitude towards things of this nature. I'm well aware of variables. Thanks again

So you come on an internet site, asking if you will get a break? Jesus christ. How about just not speeding or drawing attention to yourself?? It would never cross my mind when going on vacation to ask if I can expect a break. wtf?

Different topic, I'm thinking about going to Indy in a few weeks. I'm not PLANNING on doing anything, but if I beat up my wife, do you think I'll get a break? What about a little weed?

Depends. If she reports you and the cops badge number is lower than 19210 you are good, higher and you take a ride. With weed if the cop is named Paul, Doug, Fester, Wayne or Josh; count on a ride to jail or at the very least a citation.

Now if you do a DV with weed on your person, and its a weekday; go directly to jail and do not collect $200.00. Weekend and with your left hand its a free pass. Right hand on the weekend and its a fine.

However, if you are also speeding then things get crazy. Are you by chance a cop too? That "may" change the outcome somewhat.
