They may be hiring for the growth they have experienced, and will continue to experience from that Honda plant just down 74 in Greensburg. In 2000 I know the population was around 17,000. I know it's up around 22,000-24,000 now.Originally posted by K40To me, open carry is the equivalent of the couple making out and groping each other at the food court in the mall. Yeah, they are probably legal, as long as they don't start getting undressed. But they are still social retards.Comment

Yeah it is. Some of the cities up here did that when they were going through their large growth spurts, but the cities up here have higher median incomes and higher taxes to support those hiring cycles. I hope Shelbyville isn't hiring 5 now, and in 3 years we hear about them laying them off.Originally posted by K40To me, open carry is the equivalent of the couple making out and groping each other at the food court in the mall. See thats what I would be worrying about, but for alot of guys thats at least a job for awhile...
It will be interesting to see if we get a for sure reason to why 5 are being hired at once.."If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck"Comment

I am shocked they are hiring five as well, but Shelbyville is an old city, and maybe it is one of those that have half the force available for retirement?? Also, don't forget the casino...might be bringing in more money than we know. If the one in Anderson folds, which I think it will, despite their claims, that will drive even more of the gambling money to Shelbyville.
Anyways, pay doesn't sound to bad given the size of the city and all. More info from the ILEA posting:
The Shelbyville Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Patrol Officer. Starting salary is $36,200.00. If applicants have the full ILEA certification, starting pay is $39,032.00. Applicants must be able to pass ILEA exit standards for physical fitness, written exam, PERF requirements, backgournd check and oral interviews. I would guess after five years, pay would be in the mid $40K? Anyone know for sure?
Applications will be accepted between October 6th, 2009 to November 13th, 2009. Applicants may go to http://www.shelbyvillepd.com/ to download an application or come to the Shelbyville Police Department Monday- Friday between 8am-4pm. Any questions please contact Lt. Michael Turner at 317-392-5106 or [email protected]Comment

Ohio just passed legalized casino gambling, and I've heard estimates as high as $100 million a year that Indiana casinos will be losing each year because of that. Casinos may not be the golden geese they have been for so long.

Lets pray they don't blow all my inheritance!!Comment

I am an officer with the department. Yes, we are looking to hire 5 at one time. Believe it or not. We currently have 43 sworn officers, moving to 48. Casino, City growth, and a very suportive administration has allowed this.
This is a great department and growing in both personel and technology / equipment with leeps and bounds. For a city our size, we have a very capable department. 5 detectives, Narc officers, SWAT team, K-9's, 4 motorcycles, 5 well trained FTO's, basically every specialized skill one may be interested it is offered. Dive team, Fast water rescue, Crash Reconstruction, DARE, just name it!
Pay is nice, especially for a smaller department. Crime within our city.. not bad but growing. Two Homicide this year, several pursuits, then the rest of the basic activity. Drug use has become a huge issue as it has everywhere.
Casino has indeed brought more revenue for the city. This is to be used on new and better equipment. It has also brought a huge increase in traffic to the area. This is part of the reason for the needed increase in officers. Needed patrol in the Casino area. It brings a crazy amount of "trickle" from Indy. Several guns and narcotics found in the area, not to mention it sits beside a very popular truck stop. You can imagine what that brings.
We have I-74, and two state roads run through our city. Plans for a Criminal Interdiction Team are in the works, Neighborhood Watch program, Teen Driving program, Safe House program ...
We work regular DUI and OPO projects and have several regular overtime secutiry opertunites. Both High School and Middle School have officers posted daily as well as the Indiana Downs Horse Track uses two daily 365 days a year.
Yes, I am promoting the department as I am a officer here, and I love it. I have spent time in Investigations, and now currently a Corporal / FTO on the evening shift. I am a certified instructor for STOPS, and a fully certified Crash Reconstructionist. I highly recommend if you or anyone else is looking for a growing, well paid, and highly proactive department, they look into the Shelbyville Police Dept. www.shelbyvillepd.com
As for the pay, well lets just say it is good. If you are willing to work some the the provided extra oppertunities you can easily bring in $50k + yearly within the first couple years. Trust me.. I know.Last edited by mark268; 11-06-2009, 10:13 AM.Comment

HAHA....I busted out laughing. The fact is, when I first read that part of his message...I knew you would think about me. If my wife would allow us to move to Shelbytucky, I would apply. My freakin parents are again, tonight, donating to the cause at that damn casino. The way my inheritance is looking I am going to really need that take home!!
While I may never get a take-home, I would settle for the "never have to share" part. Some folks are down right pigs in pool cars. There are some cars that I can't drive at my department because the odor is so foul. I would end up having to go home sick if I had to use those cars for any length of time.
Hey, anyone know the top out pay? I make mid-50s now, but that is with $12K OT, which may or may not be there in the future. Still, I make mid-50s and don't do much _at all_!!Last edited by Dwntwn317; 11-08-2009, 06:50 PM.Comment
