I heard the written test was like taking the SAT. I've been told it's the hardest LE test they've taken. What's your feedback Pirate, you've been there.

I took the test on the last process and I thought the test was extremely easy. If you are not good a math/geometry/very basic algebra, you might want to do some brush up. I'm currently a police officer and due to a family emergency I could not continue the process; however, the test is the basic education test. I wish you all well in your process.Comment

I applied a year ago and am scheduled to take it on the 11th at 2pm. Not really liking the odds though! From what I've read in past threads, it's a super-competitive process. I took the TEA in '05 and was told that was the toughest LE exam, and I passed it on the first try. Hopefully this one will be easier! Good luck everyone!Comment

I'd say that with the number of apps it is going to be super competitive. However, I really don't understand why. It would be a great gig for a guy that's never been on the road, but I don't see too many "laterals" jumping ship to go Excise.
With that said, my roommate in the academy was an Excise officer and he absolutely loved it. Good luck guys/gals in this process. Why are there so many babies on O.com? Creole, you and your buddy JPSO Recruit help me out on this one....

I thought the test was relatively lame. Basic education test, as someone else mentioned. Basic algebra; very basic geometry; basic reading comprehension; arithmetic. If you graduated high school or got your GED, don't worry about the written test - you're golden.
PAT is exactly what they say it is: show up, do the exercises. If you meet the minimums they have set, great. If not, better luck next year. But honestly, if you aren't at the minimums (you know who you are).....come on - don't waste your time, and don't waste theirs. Wait to start a hiring process when you know you're ready.
The panel interview comes next, at which point you go in front of about 6-8 Excise officers, while being videotaped, and answer about 10-15 minutes (if I remember correctly) of questions. None of them were real rocket-science type questions...."Tell us what was the most serious law you've ever broken," or "Why would you make a good Excise officer."
Then you find out you've moved on to the next phase because your background officer knocks on your front door unexpectedly to inform you of this, as well as to check out your house and living accomodations. You then meet with him/her at a later point in time to do a more in-depth interview. They submit a report about whether you have the capability to do the job.
Then you find out if you've been selected. I wasn't; I was named an alternate, so I can't tell you the intimate details from there! Hopefully you find out, and can report back!"You can just go ahead and common sense your way out of this conundrum!"Comment

This is the other notable (yet typical, for policing hiring processes) is the amount of wait time in between each step. I think, if I recall correctly, last process started in February 2007. We didn't actually do the PAT until April. Background officer contacted me around May or June. I didn't get the "You're an Alternate" letter until mid July. Point being, there are relatively few steps for such a large amount of time! So, get used to the idea of getting psyched up for "the next phase," ...... and then waiting....... followed by more waiting........ to find out if you passed that phase!"You can just go ahead and common sense your way out of this conundrum!"Comment
