10-codes

Im looking to go ahead and start working on learning 10-codes. Im planning on applying with ISP next year or when the next hiring process is, so I would appreciate it if someone could help me find a list that they use.

Also, do most/all agencies in IN use the same list? Or does it vary between regions or even between counties? Ill take all the help I can get, but for reference Im in the Bartholomew County area. I have found a list online, but Im not sure if it is accurate.

Again, any help is appreciated. I understand if PMs are preferred, so feel free to send me links/lists that way if you wish.

Nothing personal but I don't think its a good idea to be passing around codes we use. I know I don't want anyone out there who is not a police officer knowing what is being said. That is why we have codes so the average joe does not know. Good Luck with the ISP and when its your time you will learn them. Really with a little repetition you pick it up fast anyway.

Codes are not designed to be cryptic, telephones and MDT's are. Anyone with a scanner can learn the meanings of codes in a week. Codes were designed for brevity and uniformity. There are no less than 5 websites that have accurate Indiana 10-codes and Signals.

Your average citizen wouldnt really care whats being said. Anyone who really wants to know can find out. I found a list I believe to be accurate (at least in part with Brown County), but outside of learning them I have no use for them as of now. I rarely listen to scanners, in part because Im not entirely sure how to use it, and in part because in this area its usually silent outside of the occasional check-in and DL check.

All Im saying is I dont want everyone out there knowing what is being said. So you have dispatch to run a guy you stop walking down the street at 3 am. You want them to come back with joe blow has 20 points on his license HTV and has warrants for weapons violations and resisting. What do you think that guys gonna do. Im not saying you cant find the codes but why would you want them broadcast for everyone to know. If thats the point why have them at all.

Get on-line much do you Hard Hitter? All you have to do is do a Google search for Indiana police codes and there you are. As someone mentioned, they're not secret Batman codes, weren't designed for that. They were designed for speedy transmissions.

I guess FEMA is trying to get departments away from using them so when a disaster hit an area and officers from other states come to assist, they will all be on the same page. 10-codes will vary on the department that uses them.

I thought most dept's got rid of them years ago because A) everyone knew what they meant B) when the S hits the F isn't it easier to just say whats wrong then try and remember an antiquated system of codes?

After some more googling, I found a list that supposedly contains all the correct 10-codes and signals for ISP. It is different that my original list.

Id imagine that if Joe Blow has 20 pts and warrants, he already knows it. He'll know straight off he's in trouble, regardless of how dispatch informs you of it. If you even get a chance to run him.


Also, I got a kick out of this list... Apparently Signal 42 is requesting the availability of a "drunkometer"

Negative. This was the case a few years ago when FEMA/Dept. of Homeland Security was going to force agencies to go to plain talk or lose funding. After a lot of urging, DHS backed off. They even had a message on their website saying that it was ok to continue using 10 codes within your agency, however, when the poo hits the fan and it goes to more than one agency, you are to use plain talk.

Personally, I use 'em and will continue to use 'em.

Hard Hitter, you need to take a chill pill. As stated, you can go to Google and get any codes. Sharp is perfectly harmless anyway. No need to start attacking members when you just signed up and started posting.

Right. 10 codes and signal for for brevity. They are not a covert language. My agency doesn't use codes or signals anymore.

Another thing I noticed and found a little odd, is that when an officer would call in for a 10-27, the dispatcher would say "your results on your 10-27 are..." I figured there was a 10-code for the results.

Yep, that defeats the purpose of signals and codes. 10-52 means, "I need an ambulance at this location." However, most would say, "I need a 10-52 at this location." What good did it do to use a code?
