  • LE Demo Vehicles

I co-own and operate a business that performs sales, installation and service on LE/Emergency equipment, including two-way radios, lights and sirens, mainly in north central Illinois.

We have several regional competitors that actually have usable demo cars (usually a used CVPI), with basically all emergency equipment installed, minus an external light bar on the roof. These cars are used to demo installs and products to various emergency service agencies.

Does anyone know if these vehicles are actually street legal (obviously this equipment can't be used off of private property) with this equipment installed, even if being used to demo products for local agencies?

I believe they are legal as long as you don't actually impersonate a police officer. Some years back a guy in Des Plaines had an exact replica of a squad car. Nothing was wrong with it until they found out he was giving out tickets and actually arresting people and bringing them to a makeshift department. He actually kept better records than the real police, lol.
