First week of CPD academy done. Man this place is TOUGH lol I but I love it here. Instructors are some of the best police officers youll ever meet. It’s every bit as challenging as I anticipated but if you suck it up and realize everything is a teaching moment it’s cool. I didn’t know it was so expensive to start off being the police tho. The prices of equipment is crazy

I need inputs from everyone.
Is it still worth it for me to try and join the force? I've been trying since 2018 but failed POWER test numerous times. I've since graduated college and started working an office job and my salary is higher (and will only go up from here) than the base pay of a PO in Chicago but I feel like I still want to become a PO. The lower salary wouldn't bother me too much if I know that i'm having fun most of the time on the job.
My 1.5 mile time has improved and I'm pretty sure I could pass it now that the POWER test standards have lowered a bit.
I don't want to join and potentially not have the city have my back, but of course this could all change with the new mayor. Now that the superintendent is leaving too, could this be a positive sign that leadership is going to be better?

1) don’t apply if you can’t pass the power test in a cyclic basis. Period.
2) there are suburban departments that pay pretty damn well and have a big department that allows you to get into a specialized unit.
3) if you like making big money but still want to be the police, look for a town that has a ton of part timers, see if they send you to the weekend part time academy. Then, you can see if you like the job enough to want to go full time

1. Understand that the power test is only but one of the challenges you face if you make it into the academy and if your struggling to pass it you may need to better your physical condition even more because this academy will BREAK you if your not physically fit and making the bare minimum will not cut it. Train to beat the old standards
2. Before you take the pay cut, financially plan for it in life. I’m not sure exactly how much dependent on your salary you are now but you will definitely feel the difference. It’s not impossible however. There is a guy in my class who was making almost 6 figures and dropped to our base pay now. He’s still here but he is having to deal with the loss of a lot financially because of it. It is stressful
3. One thing I learned so far in the academy is in this job you are not entitled to feel comfortable with it. When I say that I mean it does not matter who the leader is on the 5th floor of who holds those 4 stars. Your job is to serve the people of Chicago and ensure their protection as well as the protection of property and rights. The job is going to suck at times but you need to have a burning reason your doing this. This past first week was terrible but I kept waking up and coming everyday because this is my dream and I have alot of people that depend on me to see this through as well I asked to be here. To be honest, there’s no place I’d rather be. Ensure you have that attitude before you come here. No one will give a f*** about your complaining about leadership or how tough it is. Not saying you are complaining but I am saying be prepared to get pushed out if you do.

You absolutely CAN and SHOULD be comfortable in this job, just not cocky on calls where you think everything is “routine”, like 9-1-1 misdials where a wife tries calling because her husband beat the **** out of her or the kids. Or a burg alarm at the “routine” business, and you roll up on a ****in burglary in progress or just occurred burglary
If you’re not comfortable being filmed by everyone and everything, you cannot be on the streets. Period. You should be comfortable enough to take a deep breath, and take the bull****. You should be comfortable enough that due to the liberals “safety act”, any complaint MUST GET investigated, regardless of how garbage it is.
you should be comfortable enough to work with people you don’t like, because that’s the job.
if week 1 at Chicago Police Academy was hell, you’re in for a rude awakening out here. BTW, I went to the CPD academy as a metro, and it was a joke. It may not be a joke for everyone, but if that’s the most difficult thing you’ve done, wait until you see the real world.

One of the toughest weeks in a long time and the funeral is going to be tough as well. Couldn't be prouder to serve alongside these brave men and women. We are heartbroken by the loss. Please keep his family, friends and CPD in your prayers. A big thank you to CFD as well. Keep doing the good work and get home safe.

My previous employer is hiring retirees as well. Good luck with that.
Of the 20 guys who retired about the same time I did, I can't think of any real prospects from the group... one moved to Florida and no way is he giving up year round golf and daily margaritas. Several (myself included) have obtained private sector employment, with decent paychecks and banker hours and bosses who actually treat employees with basic decency. A couple of guys worked transport jobs in the cannabis industry, and I doubt they'd pass the background or drug test now. Several are bitter old grumps whose social skills have significantly deteriorated since leaving. The only 'maybe' who might jump at the oppurtunity to double dip is in his late fifties and has a BMI of 40, not exactly jumper material. I just don't see it working out as some may hope...What happens after you die? Lot's of things happen after you die- they just don't involve you.

Officially done with my first month at the academy. I’ve already learned so much and I’ve gained a VERY new perspective on policing and those who do this job especially in these high crime areas. I just want to take the time out to thank the veterans on this forum. I haven’t even touched the street but I already know you guys have had it tough on this job. CPD veterans for sure. The countless amount of veterans who are a bit disillusioned with this job after so many years of BS is astounding but I completely understand why you all may feel the way you do. Again thank you for carrying the load the public doesn’t talk about and appreciate enough (if at all). I hope to be as successful and resilient when I graduate out of here.

Congrats! Here's some advice. You can probably escape with one suit, but two is better. First week is paperwork, and you getting smoked. New leadership here, and the newer classes are getting it was harder than we did a few months ago. You'll be sitting in class and they'll drag you out into the hall for an hour or so. You'll have like 4 or 5 instructors screaming at you, and they don't say nice things. Your class will probably lose a couple guys/gals over the first day or two. Uniforms are expensive, and your're going to have to spend like 7 grand or so over the course of the academy. You'll be offered a loan, and take it if you're not in good financial shape (don't have access to thousands). Sweats by like week 2, then blues a couple weeks later.
Any questions, respond here or message me privately.
