  • Policing the projects

    Good evening,
Any CPD officers on here ever patrol the High rise projects when they were still up? If so which ones and what was it like? Thanks.

I used to live in projects. I also am a cop. Why do you wanna know about policing in the projects.

Worked in 002 tac and as a Dic back when they were up. Stateway, Taylor, Ida B Wells and Ida B. Extensions, Lakefront Properties, Dearborns, Ickes. And one highrise that was on 4100 S. Prairie, right in the middle of a residential area, we called it "The Lonely Building." South end of Taylor (5266, 5326, 5325) was called "The Hole." Still remember the addresses of some of those buildings all these years later.

There were about 3 highrises and some rowhouses in 003 at 63rd - Wabash/ Calumet.

How come the south end of Taylor was called the Hole?

They were the last highrise buildings in that string of projects on State and Federal. In the 80's some people were relocated to those buildings from the ones on Lake Park and Oakenwald. They stuck a different gang in each of the buildings there. That playground in the middle was "the killing fields." We all got sniped from those buildings at one time or another. It seemed The Hole had the worst of the worst that lived in CHA.

That 63rd/Vernon is bad it's like the Walking Dead sometimes. What's even worse is 65th/King. That entire area is enclosed by a cage like Jurassic Park.

Ickes, Altgeld Gardens, Cabrini Green and the Calumet Building (6217 S.) were all unique places to learn/work. Cabrini was definitely a city within a city!

I heard there was a good run place by Cabrini called Farmer Browns. Did police find good places to eat even in the projects.
