Sixty-six people wanted for charges including arson, sexual assault, child abuse, stalking and aggravated battery are behind bars in Broward because of a multiagency , countywide sweep lead by the Broward Sheriff's Office.

It all started in predawn darkness just after 4 a.m. Friday as 26 teams of four officers each started knocking on doors and entering homes. They had 700 arrest warrants with them.

BSO deputies were joined by officers from the Seminole Tribe and nine cities as well as agents from the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and the state Department of Probation.

"We took 64 bad guys off the streets and that's 64 bad guys who are no longer in our community," said Capt. Jim Polan of the BSO SWAT team.

Two others were arrested after Polan's comments. Polan said officers also gathered a great deal of useful information about other suspects they're looking for during this operation.

He said some stops were particularly successful. A search for one suspect discovered eight people living together in one house. When their names were checked, four of them were arrested because of outstanding warrants.

As one man was taken into custody from a Lauderhill home, another man living in the same home was turned in by his mother. She told BSO deputies her son was wanted for traffic violations.

While several suspects were not at home, the operation was called a success. "No. 1, with an operation like this, everyone who has arrived to work in this is going home safely ," Polan said. " We looked out for the safety of all those officers involved."

One suspect did try to resist arrest , but no one was injured.

Polan also said the sweep sent a message.

"As far as the bad guys are concerned, we want them to know we're going to come knocking on your door. So why don't you save us some time and give yourselves up," he said.

BSO said these multiagency sweeps are conducted every month. Last month's sweep in early June netted 38 arrests.

BSO plans to conduct more of the sweeps. Polan said there are 220,000 outstanding warrants in Broward.

"That's due to the huge number of cases in the system," said Elliott Cohen, BSO's director of media relations . "There are just so many cases."

Yes, we do it periodically. Many times though it is a warrant sweep with strictly Chicago Warrants. We also just started doing check points with ISP and Cook County Sheriff's Police. We also do parole check sweeps with IDOC.

We also have personnel assigned to federal and state task forces.
