  • Just a general question for all the LE hopefuls....

Mods feel free to lock but I think it deserves some conversation. With all the incidents involving police anyone having second thoughts about becoming a cop? With everything going on now it drastically changes how to do the job. In B-More cops are afraid to even do their jobs now.

All the cops on the board feel free to chime in. Have officers been instructed or encouraged to change how they engage the job? Now you have cameras everywhere and i'm pretty sure you just have to assume now that you are being recorded.

Spouses are encouraging their officers to resign or retire. Cops are horrified by hearing "I want to be a police officer" from their own kids. Most departments will not tell officers to "change how they engage the job." They will usually lie and say as long as you do the right thing nothing will happen to you and the department will back you up. How true that is varies with the department.

Yes, everything Joe said, I agree with. I just did not want to be the first to respond to someone whom I think is trying to troll slyly

It doesn't change how you do the job. I don't do illegal BS anyway and I'm not stretching the limits of what you can/can't do so I'm not worried. I'm with a department that will actually let you do your job and support you. Some departments won't back their guys at all and will always jump for politics.

Anyway. Know what you can/can't do and you will be fine.

I suspected trolling like Scotty. I just don't care either way so I gave an answer.

I don't know man. I've been in a situation even within the last few months where I bumped heads with a boss over a force issue. Everything I did was completely on the up and up, videotaped and I was able to articulate it. For whatever reason the boss said I was wrong and said he really should be investigating the incident. Not one officer or boss thought I was in the wrong except one and that one would've
sold me up the river. You must have left Garry's guys huh?

You go in and do your job morally/ethically right while following departmental policy. That's about it.

I agree with what everyone is saying. One change that my husband & I are both very strict about is no board casting that we are the police. Neither of us wear our uniforms to or from work, NO fop or police related stickers on any of our vehicles, etc. Our neighbors don't even know what we do for a living. We have children to protect. Children, I hope won't want to follow in our foot steps, unfortunate but true.

No second thoughts. Do what you're supposed to do and don't lie about anything, because its probably on video somewhere.

The only thing that came to mind is that movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"

All kidding aside, that is probably the smartest way to go these days.

Hearing the words "I want to be a police officer" put me in a melancholy funk the next few days. I really felt pretty bad. I called my dad and told him. And then I remembered how he tried to convince me not to get on the job and we all see how that went. My sergeant was telling us a few weeks ago about him telling his 5 yr old you're not becoming a cop.

I live and work downstate. Smaller department. Apples to oranges compared to what you deal with daily upstate. I assume every contact will be uploaded to youtube, and more and more deal with the young wanna be activist with a cell camera. There is and agenda. It doesn't matter if you do your job 100% by the book or not. Look at how Wilson's life was ruined for doing his job. Its not about right or wrong, its how it fits into the agenda and how it can be used to further it. We all know the script, cops are out of control, racist, executing people left and right, robbing people of their personal liberties. So much of what I see in modern society lately reminds me of Russia after WWI. Some look at me like I'm nuts, but I remind them how well a self described socialist is doing in the presidential polls. I apologize for going off the reservation a bit.

As far as not wanting your kid to get into LE.

This isn't the first time this type of environment has occured for LE. Yes there are more cameras but the anti police sentiment is not new.

Like everything else in the US, it will eventually blow over.

Stuff like this is generational, and by the time my kids are old enough to decide what they want to do, who knows how it will be.

That said being in LE in general has NEVER been an easy job, and everyone in it knew that growing up, yet we still got into it.
