  • Cook County Oak Forest Hospital Police...

Seeing that for the last couple of years, I read so many
replys in regards to the Cook County Hospital Police and not once
have I read a reply back from one of our own...

So here I am and ready to help out with the issues of...

    Are we the police...

    Yes we are...

    Can we carry...

Yes we can and I really stress this...

Some say this and some say that...

I really don't care what some think because
15 years, all of the ribbons, awards and funerals
    I have attended...

Being a police officer and firefighter is a great
    thing...

In this job, some people love us and some people don't...

    So...

    Any questions???

    Why yes...

    I'll answer that question...

By the way that's Mr. Hospital Police Officer to you...

The hospital is going to be a regional outpatient center with the Oak Forest Regional Outpatient Center Police Department at your service...

I say another 15 years and I'll get 30 years in...

    Got to love this job...

    Next question please...

      Nice to meet you...

We start off at $36,980.00 and work our way up...

We have great county benefits and our current FOP contract
      is up for arbitration...

We are asking for 10% for firefighter II and we might have a good chance
      at getting it...

I'm the head union guy here for last 10 years and
      it's very cool here...

We get plenty of NEMERT training and

We are not going anywhere and I mean anywhere...

      Except for our court calls

      Next question!!!

Well I hope your grandmother is doing well...
          I might even know her...

We just exhausted our last list and hired around ten or twelve off of it...

I remember for years we could not get anyone to put in for the job...

Now everyone wants in and I mean everyone...

          Next question!!!

            Sorry for your Grandmothers passing...

We here at the department have a deep respect for our visitors, patients and employees...

I will let everyone know when we are hiring again...

The budget crunch was hard; but we made it and a new squad is on the way...

Everyone at District 6 courts were saying good bye to the Forest Preserve; except us...

We knew and heard the axe swinging around for years...

We always keep our heads low and it missed all the time...

            Here's the funny thing...

            Every time I run out of moving citations or parking tickets;
I walk in the main office and they give me new ones...

            Be safe,

            Till next time...

                  Well thanks...

The suffering ended along time ago...

It took time to fix things; but its working and there is no turning back now...

For nine years I had to watch everything I did as to not allow the brass to charge at me...

I had to walk on a hall of egg shells to be the union guy that I have become today...

My fellow officers were there to hear me and give me advice, ideas and support...

My first day at the Oak was weird; because I was for one new to the job and was given advice from an old friend in regards to the older officers at the Oak...

He said to me..."Don't let the them Old Timers discourage you from your job..."

When I first was told that my first day to report was two weeks away, I had engaged in a conversation with a State's Attorney from the Juvenile Justice Division...(I use to work there...) he was happy that I was taking the position here at the Oak...

One thing that has never left my mind was what he also told me and it went like this...

"I'm very happy to see you looking forward to becoming a police officer and firefighter...
Its not all the time that one gets to be both and get the paid training...
I'll still be paying off my student loan for the next thirty years or so...
I wish you the best of luck and do a good job..."

I never saw him again in the court systems...

                  Now...

                  Any questions???

I can answer that question with one word...

                      No...

The members of this department are just guys that took a chance where no one else wanted to...

When I was at the Sheriff's Academy a couple of the Sheriff's police cadets asked who I knew to get this far...

I told them... I guess I got lucky and earned the job the old way...

I filled out the application and turned it in...

At the graduation ceremony, when the Sheriff's officers noticed my county patch, it was
like..."You should have told us you were one of us..."

After that it took years to try and get people to apply for the job...

We were short staffed for eight years at one time...

                      Nobody wanted to apply!!!

                      Next question...

                        @ Loyolapd

They are budgeted for 6 less ofcs this year, laying them off probably in May. I think its safe to say, they wont be hiring anytime soon. I imagine they may start a process just to acquire a list, but no telling when.

PS- with retirements, med leaves, and ofcs going to other depts, they will def be needing a list soon. I can see them hiring a couple at a time but no large groups like the past 2 years. Its hard to predict anything with Cook County, that’s the only definite thing.

Ofc8269 is correct on the six less budgeted for this year...

We will try and get the officers onto the Stroger hospital Police Department or our older officers might just decide to retire to save them...

In the past we had the axe swing over our heads and we have been lucky...

This time who knows; but we do plan ahead for these setbacks...

OFHPD, and Stroger for that matter, are a great places to start. The experience is invaluable.

If you decide to stay, other than the pension it's nothing wrong with spending your career there.

Just keep in mind, it is a Cook County Job.

I grew up in Oak Forest. I always thought that knight at the air conditioning place accross the street was the night watchman.

Kidding, of course. Thanks for the info. I never knew what kind of gig there was at that hospital.
