CALUMET CITY | City officials are likely this month to approve hiring three new patrol officers for the Police Department.
Sixth Ward Alderman Nick Manousopoulos said Thursday a measure directing the city's Police and Fire Commission to hire the three new patrol officers will be on the agenda when the City Council holds its next scheduled meeting on Sept. 22.
That measure was on the agenda for the meeting Thursday, but it was deleted at the last minute at Manousopoulos' request. He said there is still one ordinance related to city hiring that aldermen need to review before they can vote.
The measure in question will instruct the Police and Fire Commission to fill three vacancies within the Police Department.
One of those vacancies was caused by the retirement last month of former Assistant Police Chief Anthony Augun, while two other vacancies were caused by the resignations earlier this year of two patrol officers.
The measure that has yet to be approved by the City Council also calls for three promotions within the Police Department, including one lieutenant to captain, one sergeant to lieutenant and one patrolman to sergeant.
The Police and Fire Commission will make its selection of three new police officers from among those who took an examination offered last spring.
"If they're not already on the eligibility list (of people who passed the examination), they don't stand a chance," said Police Chief Edward L. Gilmore.
Gilmore said the commission would pick three people, who would then undergo psychological profiles and background checks to ensure they are properly suited to being police officers.
Gilmore was unsure how long it would take the commission to pick three people, but he said the profiles and background checks would take four to six weeks to complete.
