Calumet City Cop Shot, Police Seek Bank Robbers

Bishop Ford Freeway Closed; Nearby School On Lockdown

    May 19, 2009 3:34 pm US/Central

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A Calumet City police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon while in pursuit of three alleged bank robbers who crashed on the Bishop Ford Freeway during a police chase.

The incident began after three alleged suspects robbed the Citibank at the River Oaks Mall in Calumet City at gunpoint about 2:15 p.m., according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Juan Valenzuela, who said it appeared the suspects involved in the robbery were in pursuit by Calumet City police when their vehicle crashed on the Bishop Ford near 130th Street near the Beaubien Woods Forest Preserve.

The offenders fled from the vehicle and one offender fired shots at a Calumet City police officer, Valenzuela said.

The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with non-life threatening injuries, a source said.

One of the alleged bank robbers was taken into police custody, Valenzuela said. Unconfirmed reports said a second offender was caught by Chicago Police near 130th and Ellis about 3:45 p.m.

The second offender was allegedly apprehended in a swampy area near the Altgeld Gardens housing project. He reportedly has a gunshot wound to one of his arms, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports.

As of about 3:50 p.m., police were continuing to search for a third suspect in that area, near Carver Military Academy, 13100 S. Doty Ave.

Police were utilizing helicopters and police dogs to search for the offenders near the forest preserve.

Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said ambulances were on standby as the search continued as of 3 p.m.. Crews were searching around a wooded area and near a steel bridge for the suspects.

FBI agents were also sent to the scene and were alerted to the Calumet City bank robbery but had "very limited information" at 2:45 p.m., spokeswoman Karen Kelly said. Agents were in pursuit at the Bishop Ford location with local law enforcement, she said.

Cook County Sheriff's police were also sent to the scene to "assist," according to spokeswoman Lisa Gordon.
