  • Fulton co vs APD jurisdiction

I saw a Fulton Co Police officer working an Extra job near downtown Atlanta. So my question is this. Fulton County Police have jurisdication anywhere in Fulton Co and Atlanta PD has jurisdiction only with in the City limits. Correct?
If that is the case could Fulton County police and or Fulton Sherrifs department assist with policing and performing arrest in the City of Atlanta? If the Fulton Co police/Sherriff officer is in the City of Atlanta and needs backup does he have to wait for other Fulton Co police/Sherriffs officers to get to him or is he tied in to the APD dispatch?

Fulton County PD have jurisdictionin unicorporated Fulton County. They work inareas that are not within any city limits. ATlanta is not the only city in Fulton county. I think there are ten citied inFulton. College Park, Sandy Springs, East Point, Johns Creek, Union City and some others. Well FCPD works in the areas where there are no city limits.

From my understanding they can work EJ's in the county but thats about as far as it goes. Theirs a Dekalb PD officer who works at the krogers on moreland in 5points Its in Dekalb county but its the city of Atlanta. Fulton Pd does 0ZERO0 policing inside the city limits and im not really sure if they are suppose to work EJ's in the city but it happens. I mean alot of APD guys hate it and im one because what happens people like Fulton PD or SO will come into the city and work extra jobs for less than what we APD require and then when something happens they call us to handle it. Your getting paid so handle your **** I seen it too many times espcially with Fulton SO which is weird because they have to get a supervisor approval before they can make an arrest on an EJ. Oh yeah as far as back up Fulton SO is still on Analog radio while were on digital so we cant monitor their radio's so they would better off calling SO for back up. Typically we back up anybody that needs it but the main people we back up are GSP, GTECH, GSU, thats pretty much it no other agencies really do anything in the city.

All Fulton County departments (i.e. sheriff, PD, marshalls) can work extra jobs anywhere within the county which includes Atlanta. As ATLPD3635 pointed out, they take a lot of jobs from us because they work them for much less. In my opinion it becomes an officer safety issue due to them still being on analog. For example, what happens if a deputy is fighting a perp on an extra job and puts out a help call? If we were all on the same frequency, APD would respond much faster. If another major incident, like the Nichols shooting, occurs again we will still have the same communication problems.

Best way to solve this problem is to dissolve fulton co PD and not let the SO on the roads

So when you dissolve the Fulton Co. PD who should police the area? Maybe a Metro police department would be a good solution to a lot of the problems.

Just annex the unincorporated parts of the county to the cities that want it. For example the parts over near camp creek pkwy that are on Fulton PD might as well become City of East Point. Casade RD west of 285 is on Fulton PD which goes all the way to FIB to the Cobb Co line might as well be annexed to City of Atlanta. And ETC
At one point it looked as if it was heading that direction which is what happened to North Fulton county which is actually trying to leave the county as a whole and be a part of Milton Co...lol which it just may happen.

I am sure that no one wants Fulton Industrial and what about the southern area of College Park and the southern most areas of South Fulton Parkway/Cascade Campbellton road intersection and everything west and south of it.

And now that I am thinking about it APD cant handle the areas they already have why should/would they take on more?

It was sort of a joke...

In all seriousness it could and probably should be done though... Fulton Co has a police department, sheriff's department, and a marshals unit.

Once the economy picks up unincorporated parts in south fulton will want their own city or College Park could annex it. The parts to the east and west can easily be annexed into the city of Atlanta.

Why should they? Your right they shouldn't. Why would they? For the taxes ofcourse. SW Z-4 atlanta has grown tremendously in the past 4yrs. Slowly Atlanta keeps picking up more and more of unincorporated Fulton Co. It happens so fast one day you know that you only handle calls in the parking lot of a certain business but the actually store is on Fulton PD. Then you come in next week and find that your answering calls in the parking lot and inside the store. Lol (true story) There are 6 zones but they have rumored to make a z-7 but we dont have enough officers to supply the zones we have now. But if they pick it I wont mind I love the Idea of my jurisdiction expanding

We can't handle the areas we already have? Crime is down 12% citywide from 2008 and there are a few zones down around 20%. Not sure what was meant by the comment. The perception might be that crime is up due to the media always bashing us, but facts are facts.

The department is headed in the right direction, except for our pay issues. Patrol rifles and Tasers should be coming which should boost morale a bit. New leadership is what is drastically needed right now.

You dont have the manpower to handle what you already have. My best friend and several of my other friends work for APD (I went through half of the APD academy 10 years ago and keep in touch with a lot of people who I went through with) I live in Zone 1 and get 1 hour response times from the police when the people from the other neighborhoods (bankhead and the bluff) decide to come over to my nice subdivision and cause trouble. I never pay attention to what the media says. Also the media tells about all the people that you all are hiring but not all the people who are leaving the department, so I figure if you hire 200 officers by the end of the year you are really just replacing the ones who have left. So I stand by my statement that you all can't handle what you already have, not a bash on the officers you just dont have the manpower. I also don't listen to statistics either, not sure how long you have been on but APD has a repretation for misclassifying crimes to make the city look better than it actually is.

I have been with the department 5 years and have been assigned to Zone One the entire time. If you are having problems in your neighborhood, I welcome you to come see me at the precinct and we will deal with your issues or I can point you in the right direction.

As far as your manpower point, is the APD short-staffed? Absolutely! But you know, we get it done with what we have.
