I was in the running with Dekalb County and was approved for hire but at last minute The new chief looked over my profile and disqualified me due to an open container citation i received a few years back and my credit history.. Im debating should I apply with Atlanta.. Any advice from you ATL Officers out there?

This may be a potential disqualification with other depts as well. How long ago was the open container citation and how bad is the credit history? Are you making an effort to pay your debt off and is a bunch of stuff in collections? If there's a bunch of stuff in collections, you may as well forget getting hired by most departments because unfortunately it makes you look irresponsible when it comes to financial responsibilities.

Just some info... Atlanta PD is being VERY picky at the moment. My buddy was removed from the job fair today because of 3 minor arrests as a teenager over 20 years ago. These are arrests only, not convictions. Another applicant admitted to using the services of a prostitute once which was nearly 20 years ago also. Applicants were dropping like flies today. They stated during the briefing to disclose everything & depending on the situation they could work with you. It seemed as if they were disqualifying people for things that are very petty. They stated they are not looking for perfect people, maybe just choir boys.

They are in a position now where they can be picky because all the other well paid metro-Atlanta agencies are not hiring. Let the others start hiring again and a murder conviction will be about the only thing that will get you DQed from the ATL...

Actually the hiring process would not change rather everyone was hiring or not. Background and Recruitment has a new Lt over there who is on his game I mean honestly he really doesn't care if we get 150 officers immediately because the truth is with our academy and process its takes aproximately 10-13months to make it to the streets as beat officer from the date of hire. He has been giving the green light for the B.I not to be so aggresive on credit which most dept aren't so calm about. We need officers but the batch that came in the past 2yrs had a lot of rotten apples in it due to mass hiring and out of 300 of them maybe 120 are still with the dept. Over half who have left were terminated. So the process is alot stricter and it will remain the same no matter who else is hiring.

Just my 2 cents, but the likely cause of your DQ was not so much the open container but rather the credit issues (the new chief over at DKPD who DQ'ed you ran their IA for a few years.)

If I were you, I'd concentrate on paying off your debt and then reapply.

Good to hear about the strict hiring requirements - I was somewhat afraid to apply after recently hearing a few former officers bashing the department, but it has been over 1 year or longer since the bashers have worked there...probably a batch of the slackers which were hired a few years back. I want to work for a large big city agency and expect to see some bad apples, but I would like to know that overall I am working with honest, straight up officers that have my back. I am giving Atlanta a chance and hope it works out. Looks like an action packed ride and the money is pretty good, too.

Negative, on the part about officers who have been gone 1 year+ try 3 months. It is not bashing kid it is the called the truth. And kiddo watch who you are calling a slacker. I've locked up more felons than you can hope to, and have arrested someone for EVERY major felony except murder and child molestation (and ONLY because homicide and sex crimes do those) been in EVERY possible situations you THINK you can handle, have seen on TV, and dreamed about as you watched the recruting video and was a top producer for the zone till the day I left.

Buddy I'm still getting subpeoned for court for testimony in Serious (read agg battery, agg asualt, traffiking, etc) felonies since I left both in Fulton County and Spring St aka Federal Court. My reputation speaks for itself.

Get through the process first do a couple of years in a zone (other than 2 or 5) and THEN you can talk with some level of authority about how good or bad the situation and morale of the average street officer who is humping calls everyday in SW Atlanta or you can take the word of a bunch of APPLICANTS such as yourself .

LOL this post is funny... you are quick to jump down that guys throat when he said nothing negative to warrant your type of response...

Do you not comprehend what he said? He stated he heard people bashing but it's been awhile so he's thinking things have gotten better since the APD has lost a lot of the new hires they had...

He wasn't taking the word of applicants but rather APD officers who have vented on this forum...

According to your post, unless you're an APD officer that works SW Atlanta, you don't know anything or aren't a real cop? That's real nice of you.

Your post is confusing.... are you saying morale is/was low or it's not?

Also since you were such a big bad policeman why did you leave?

Hey buddy. I have had previous PM discussions with the previous poster where I gave the pro's and con's of APD and he basically said I was bashing the city and was a slacker. I do not "bash" APD cause I love the department and always will, however the CITY has major issues which affects the department and therby affect the morale and working conditions of those officers. These conditions are most likely to improve with the new incoming administration.

BTW guy I did all my time in Z-4 you know....SW Atlanta, exactly what department have you worked for?....oh wait, I forgot you haven't. You are just a guy who has close to 1200 posts on a LE Internet board but is not a cop.... well I think that in itself says it all. Wait, I bet you have a bunch of police "friends".....whatever you say buddy
