is this school for the SCMPD? Does anyone have any type of feedback on this department? Are they even hiring with the economy the way it is? I am interested in a career change and am just starting to do some research on becoming a LEO. I had my eye on the SCMPD... any type of feedback would be great! THanks in advance!

I've still got my full time job, but things there are about to change in a big way. Thats why i was thinking about changing careers. Do dept's not hire you and then send you? Or is that a common thing to put your way through. Of the above mentioned, I would probably go for Garden City. I know they are on 12 hr shifts where as merto is on 8's.

Ummm, you might want to verify the start date.

It still shows as the 28th on the GPSTC website, but the start date is the 24th now. Chatham County SO is sending a fair number to that class.

Steps in the right direction? So today I went by the SCMPD recruiters office but both recruiters were out. I was hoping to speak to them, thinking a face to face interaction would show my intentions rather than an email. I have the application filled out and now just have to turn it in. I know the next Academy starts up in January...should I wait to turn things in or should I go ahead and be on of the first to turn in for the next round?

hey guys I have also applied to the department and am taking the test on October 12th. I was wondering if it is difficult to hired on and sent through the academy? I presently live in Ohio but am relocating in January to Bluffton, South Carolina and hope to attend the academy in January. Any advice or comments or any information at all would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, I work for SCMPD, and as stated above, SCMPD sends their recruits to either the SE Regional Academy or Savannah Tech's pilot program. If you go to the regional academy, which I can say produces a better prepared product, you'll have 5 weeks of patrol school, followed by 10 weeks of PTO. For the Sav Tech, the academy is longer and more Metro influenced, and they graduate and come straight to PTO. I was offered a job by both Garden City and Savannah, and went with SCMPD because of the pay (I have a degree, so that bumps my pay up a bit). However, Garden City has the perks of a take home car right out of the gate, lots of training oppertunities, and less politics. Its all up to you and who you feel most comfortable with. Garden City claimed they weren't hiring when I was at the academy, but then picked up two pre service people on top of the two recruits they sent through the academy, so you'll have to go talk to them yourself.

I love working with SCMPD personally. I work in the city itself, and its a small town with plenty of big city crime to occupy you. Many people use the experiance and training they get from SCMPD to move on to bigger and better things, or to just have in their hip pocket as they move to a smaller department later in their careers. Either way, the experiance you'll get with SCMPD far outpaces any other department in the area just because of the city. I wasn't on the street for a month before I had worked my first shooting, stabbing, and rape. In any case, let us know what you decide! You'll love being LEO... I had no plans whatsoever to join this profession, but the option became available, I thought I'd try it, and now I'm hooked!

What is a typical day like? What are the hours for the academy? Is it always at Armstrong or do you have alternate mtg places?
