  • Hiring Freeze Question

I've read on numerous threads that many depts. in FL are on a hiring freeze. A buddy of mine left our department here in Indiana two years ago for Daytona Beach PD and is back here on vacation this week. Talking to him, he said that departments are still hiring like crazy. He said that the hiring freeze is regarding "additional positions" in the budget, not the ones that are already on the books.

Basically he said as long as people are leaving/retiring, those positions will continue to be filled no problem. Is this the scoop? Do tell. I (like many northerners) have been looking your way for some time now. Just curious.

    Thanks.

That would make sense to me it seems. Keep in mind retirement for many depts in Florida including Sheriffs offices, is 20 yrs. That coupled with people leaving due to moves or what they feel are other, better depts, means the attrition rate is probably a bit higher than other states.

Most depts do not normally lower their staff, especially field/patrol units, but continue to hire to at least keep what they currently have. They may not be adding on many new additional slots, but they will usually be hiring to fill the few vacancies they have. Try these two websites for more information on what Florida Depts are hiring:

Check them often as they update quite frequently.
