I am wondering if anyone has any information on what the process is like for Miami and also if any current/former officers can comment on what the department is like once you complete the academy. Thanks!

Search Forums "Miami Police Department" or "MPD". There's a ton of info. already in various threads on this forum. They'll be very informative.

Check out a couple of the signatures to get an idea of how fast the process is.

Maybe I am not searching correctly but the one thing I have had trouble finding information on is their academy and what it is like. Is it paramilitary or more adult learning? What about PT requirements, etc?

I know the academy is more paramilitary and does consist of alot of PT. But I havent seen many details on the academy around the forum

I know it's currently being run through Miami Dade college; from what I know, programs like that are often (but not always) non-military in nature. With what awaits new cops on the street there, I'd welcome the discipline and stress that comes with a para-m academy.

What does the city of Miami do with oc spray, taser, and tear gas? Does everybody experience all three in the academy?

          What is FTO like?

OK this the quick and dirty. I am in the academy right now... (well almost) Right now i am working a desk job until the Academy starts. Right now we PT 3 times a week. NOT HARD... BUT GET IN SHAPE NOW!!! Day by day the PT gets harder and they will not wait for you! Remember, once selected YOU WORK FOR THE CITY OF MIAMI POLICE... NOT VICE VERSA.

Once in the academy you will PT EVERY DAY.... either 4 hours of ground work - running - cardio... OR 4 hours of defensive tactics. FDLE has changed back to the older style... MORE PHYSICAL MILITARY BASED TRAINING and SCENERIOS as opposed to intense academics and book reading. GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELPS...

FYI... if you are in the process it would be a good idea to begin learing military drill comands NOW!

Not sure if you meant Miami-Dade College N.Campuss or Miami-Dade Police Academy.

MDPD's Academy requires you to do them all (taser, OC, tear gas) and we don't even carry OC lol

IDK! However I would never spray some one. I would much rather tase them and thats it. Unless the taser fails then they'll get hit with OC. They spray us in case we backup you guys and you guys spray the prisoner and it gets on us we'll know how we are going to react to it.

HA FUNNY... in case we spray you... We here at the MPD are highly qualified OC SNIPERS... lol!!!!! Hell I'm sure I'll end up being the 1st SOB to spray myself. Practice, practice, practice! You're right about the TAZER though. I would rather drop some one with that than run the risk of over spray. Take care buddy and be safe!

Lmao! I wish they would give us OC.. It would make me feel better getting sprayed knowing that I'll have the opportunity to spray people after I get hit with it. Good luck in the academy... How do you like the goffer job?? I start as a goffer in Oct w/the county. My academy got pushed all the way back to Jan 09!
