  • Full-Time SWAT Teams in Florida

I am looking at making a move to FL. My primary goal is to get on a full-time SWAT Team (again). If anyone has any credible information about which departments, how long before you can tryout, team duties/responsibilities, etc. it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Do any agencies have full time swat teams (other than on television)?

      Yes.
      LAPD.
      LASD.
      NYPD.
      FLA has a couple.

I thought LAPD SWAT was comprised of guys from Metro who handled other specific incidents in between SWAT call ups. When did that change?

          SJPD MERGE.

Full time just means that is their assignment, not rolling around in MRAPS all day.

I seem to remember a reality tv/documentary type show a few years ago with a full-time SWAT team in Florida. I think it was Miami Dade.

NYPD does not have a swat unit. NYPD has an Emergency Services unit. That unit is on full time patrol covering everything from boiler explosions, bridge jumpers, floating bodies in the water to heavy weapons responses. They usually respond prior to the bomb squad. Their level of expertise extends far beyond the traditional concept of swat, yet they probably should be considered the original swat unit.

Yep. ESU. Full time assignment that does everything.

Dealt with ESU many times in the Courts from handling heavy weapons escorts for major drug dealers to possible bombs. Never had the attitude produced in most TV shows. Just down to earth coppers who knew exactly what to do and how to get it done.
