Dealer finds extra Corvette (slightly damaged) on lot

What is left of a Corvette rest on top of new cars at Tropical Chevrolet.

A speeding motorist avoiding an early morning routine traffic stop was chased by police from two departments through several northern Miami-Dade neighborhoods.

The chase ended when his car slammed into a light pole and went airborne, landing atop vehicles at a Miami Shores car dealership. He escaped with life and limb intact -- but his Corvette obliterated.

The driver staggered away from the wreckage, then watched from the curb as firefighters sprayed water on the remains of his sports car.

After a brief trip to the hospital, he was interviewed early Thursday afternoon by Miami-Dade Traffic Homicide detectives, who are handling the investigation. Officers added that the driver was not cooperating.

The accident happened about 5 a.m. at Tropical Chevrolet, located at 8880 Biscayne Blvd.

Ari Wildstein, son of Tropical owner Larry Wildstein, got a call from Miami Shores police about 5:30 telling him of the accident. When he arrived at work, he couldn't believe what he saw.

''It looked like an explosion,'' said Wildstein, 29. ``There were cars 50 feet away with sparkplugs through the windshield. I hope he's got good insurance.''

Miami Shores Chief of Police Kevin Lystad said units from North Miami Beach and North Miami were chasing the Corvette south on Biscayne Boulevard when the driver lost control at 88th Street, an awkward, V-shaped intersection where Biscayne and Northeast Sixth Avenue merge going south.

The driver stuck the first of several light poles and crashed through a concrete pylon. Debris flew and so did the car, landing in front of the dealership, splayed atop two Chevy Suburbans.

Those two vehicles, along with a Tahoe, were total losses, with the damages to those cars alone topping $100,000, Tropical Chevrolet officials said.

At least 20 vehicles on the lot were damaged.

''The big cars up there helped protect the building,'' Wildstein said.

The Corvette's alternator landed 150 feet beyond where the chassis came to rest.

Pieces of the Corvette littered the roadway and the pavement was slick with gasoline.

''It looked like a bunch of improvised explosive devices had been detonated,'' said Miami Shores Lt. Jack White, ``It was a very sensational accident.''

A woman passerby assisted the driver. When a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue truck arrived, a bandage was applied to his head. Then he got up and walked into the rescue truck.

A witness, who gave his name only as Chris, had just finished work and returned home off of 88th Street. He heard the crash and was one of the first on the scene.

''I can't believe he walked away from that,'' Chris said.
