  • Central Florida Agencies...

Just wanted to start a new thread, conversation and ask the following questions:

    1) What department are you processing with/ or have processed with?

    2) How long was the hiring process?

    3) What agencies have you sent an application to?

    4) What agencies are currently hiring?

    5) In your opinion what county has the best law enforcement academy?

    6) What was your favorite part of the academy?

Feel free to add more questions to keep the conversation going …

Hopefully in October when the new fiscal year starts more positions will be available!!!

Not to hijack your post, but many many departments in Central Florida are hiring, particularly, West Central.

Already a cop... but I'm bored so...

      1) A lot

      2) I took my first test for my agency in October of 2006, and started in April of 07.

      3) At the time, I sent an application to every department in Seminole and Orange County that was hiring. Just as everyone should do.

      4) Not mine... but a lot are.

      5) Valencia is the best in Central Florida... but I'm glad I went where I did.

      6) None, it was annoying and sitting in class 8 hours a day made me want to beat my head in. Now I make sure people know that the academy is important... however all it is is a very very basic foundation. The police academy is the equivalent of Intro to Accounting for CPAs, or Intro to Business as a freshman for someone that has the MBA. It's important, but it teaches you just about enough to get yourself killed.

How about we list the agencies that are hiring then? We all know Orange SO, Winter Garden PD, so... let's list some
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

        I Am the Sheepdog.

Thanks for the info studchris. Yeah, Valencia was pretty good in my opinion, It would be nice if they had room for LEVO and room for the gun range.

Orange county SO, almost done processing with them myself.
"If I won the lottery, I'd buy myself a police department. I'd hire all my buddies and we'd all drive Corvette patrol cars and sit around the doughnut shop I would own. Whenever someone would come in and say "I guess this my tax dollars at work", I would tell him to get the hell out my doughnut shop, then we'd all laugh and try to figure out what to do next."

--Quote taken from User "kcso"....hope you don't mind buddy, but this was just too funny not to steal from you....I'm still laughing.--

Seminole County SO Rather quick process but expect 4 months at least.
Brevard SO Dont make much money but expect 6 months
Polk SO Good sheriff but very, very rural and dont make a whole lot compared to the surrounding agencies.
St Cloud PD These guys are off the wall. They'll tell you "yeah, you'll be on the road in 3 weeks. They hire who they want, when they want. $35k starting. You get a take home car the day you get hired. As of this week, I hear that they're laying off employees. They also like to hire 19 year old kids and pass up on prior military, experienced candidates. Look elsewhere. 3 weeks to 9 months.
Kissimmee PD Decent from what I hear. I know a few of their officers. I hope you speak Spanish though. High 30's, 4-6 months.
Orlando PD I also know a few who work there. They love it. Expect 6 months, which is the industry standard.
                          Maitland PD
Cocoa PD Is surprisingly ghetto. Mid to high 30's starting. 4-6 months.
Ocoee PD Again, they're selective but have no reason to be. Small town and it seems to be the starting point for younger guys who all eventually move up to Orange County. They make $40k and some change. I know a few who work there. They like it but all say that they're gonna look elsewhere when their 2 year contract is up.
                          Sanford PD
Osceola County If you weren't born and raised or have "kin" in Osceola county, look elsewhere. They'll pass you right up. Very political area. 9 months seems to be their average. The most recent group said it was nearly a year from start to finish.

Hillsboro County is one of the best in the state and gets paid well.
Manatee County is top notch as well and make pretty good money. Training, equipment and deputies are high quality.
Sarasota County is pretty decent from what I hear.

Slater, get certified first. Thats one 6 month hurdle you wont have to cross. Once you're certified, then start looking around. Its much, much easier.

I worked for an agency up in northern NY so I was coming from 12 years of experience to include my military years. I landed a good job down here after I applied to numerous agencies and went through their entire processes. So, naturally, I'm a bit biased now.
