  • City of Miami Police Department proposed layoff

Wow, I was shock when I read this part from the budget proposed:

In order to balance the budget, the following actions are proposed:

    1. Require all City employees, with the exception of Police (sworn) personnel, to make the following
percentage reduction to their annual salary effective 10/1/09:

    Over $250,000 .................................................. ........................ 15%
    $250,000 to $200,000 .................................................. ............. 12%
    $199,999 to $150,000 .................................................. ............. 10%
    $149,999 to $100,000 .................................................. ............. 9%
    $99,999 to $70,000 .................................................. ................. 8%
    $69,999 to $50,000 .................................................. ................. 7%
    $49,999 to $40,000 .................................................. ................. 6%
    Under $39,999 .................................................. ........................ 0%

o Do not provide anniversary and longevity pays to AFSCME 1907, AFSCME 871 and IAFF personnel
    effective 10/1/09

o Do not provide across-the-board salary increases to AFSCME 1907, AFSCME 871 and IAFF
    personnel effective 10/1/09

The total reduction as a result of the above action is anticipated to decrease personnel costs by $21.7 million.

    2. Eliminate 191 Police (sworn) positions of which 177 positions are filled and 14 positions are vacant, and
restrict to fill 47 positions at a salary reduction of $14.3 million.

        Why would you be shocked?

You will not be getting a pay cut.

You just said so, it's there in your post.

Some of us are taking a pay cut, albeit temporary, when we become cops. But at least, we are doing it in order to do something we love.

In my case, I'm an 18 year employee with a major airline.

Last year I made $50K before taxes. But I made that much working extra shifts and overtime, and hating every minute of it because it is just a job, not a calling which is what we want to when taking this job.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be well compensated for the job and the risks it entails, but, if you are doing it for the money alone, then, choose a better paying department or adjust your finances.

        I'm willing to do that.

I've been working at the same pay rate ever since 9/11, because back then, the airline and the union agreed that profits were low, due to diminishing passenger loads.

Afterwards, we saw how airline executives were awarding themselves bonuses, in supposedly, crisis times. But, unfortunately, there wasn't anything we could do about it since the agreements for pay cuts, were in place.

So we sucked it up, and still are.

Even now, we are in negotiations, and again, the union and the airline has agreed to postpone negotiations because the economy it's so bad.

So, for us aspiring to go into law enforcement, we should go into it not looking to profit, but to have the chance to do our calling.

The rewards ($$$) will eventually come.

If this happens, the domino effect will be tremendous. That would be an additional 177 certified applicants to compete with throughout South Florida. Not Good!

gcopter, I was referring to #2 which is highlighted in red. Less officer patrolling the streets especially in the toughest areas. I stay in lil haiti area and it's already dangerous and if less officers patrolling the streets; who knows what can happened. It will take officers longer than now to respond to a call. Calls would be so back up in queue! Then again, it also a real downfall for future law enforcement officers that wanted to apply.

Didn't they just receive enough funding to hire 50 officers?

It sounds like a scare tactic to me. No way that is going to fly by.

I thought Miami got the most amount of money for South Florida.

Wow...that would be a lot of unemployed officers....at least I see that the proposal has larger cuts for the larger salaries....

I am sure the money is still there but they can not do anything with it until this layoff situation is settled. They can use it to hire the 50 officers which why they received the money for or they have to file a waiver and resubmit an application to use the money to retain officers.

They City knows better than to abuse these funds. They do not want to end up on the banned list like Camden NJ, Newark NJ, Amtrak PD etc..
